The park was fairly full by 6:00 PM. it was extremely dry in the middle of September and there were lots of flies and grasshoppers. There was a self pay station but the Rangers came around at least three times while we were there overnight. Fellow campers were good about shutting their generators off at the 8:00 PM deadline.

It is a first come first serve campground. It did not fill up any day we were there. Bison came thru the campground one day. There is no power or showers. There were also plenty of bugs since you are near the river. Easy access to the campground.

We were under the impression that this was not fully open due to some bad info on the internet. We decided to take a drive thru and check it out. After a conversation with the very helpful camp host, we discovered that there were plenty of openings on July 3. He also said it rarely fills up to capacity (possibly due to the fact it is in the North Unit which has less traffic and there is no electricity). Anyway, we were able to fill our fresh water tanks and use the dumping station. The bathrooms are nice and new, but no showers. In the evening we rode our bikes up the road to the “Cannonball” scenic spot to take pictures. It was like we had the entire park to ourselves at that moment. I’m so glad we allowed our curiosity to prevail and drove through the campgrounds. It turned out to be a great experience, even for just one night! By the way, we named our van Juniper, so it was meant to be!

Most are pull-throughs. There is both a modern and rustic (pit) toilet. Both are near the host campsite. When we arrived there were many sites to choose from. According to the very friendly and helpful host, it rarely fills and that was the case during our visit. There are no hookups, and it was extremely hot during the day and it didn’t really cool off until well after the sun set. Needless to say, sleep came late, but it cooled off nicely. Fee was $7/night with geezer pass.

We stayed in site 41 which was on the inside of the loop but across from site 40 which appeared to have been washed out and permanently out of service. We were able to walk over to site 40 and had a great view of the Little Missouri River and spotted all sorts of wildlife and their tracks. I was able to fit my truck and travel trailer (40 feet total) in the site parked at an angle, with some cover of trees and bushes for privacy from the loop road.
Be aware that it got HOT at night in early July (90s all night) and generator hours are 8am to 8pm so be prepared to suffer a little in the heat of the night, or make accommodations for a fan of some type.
The dump station is located away from the camp, closer to the entrance road and group campsite but the flush and potable water hoses both leak at the top of the vacuum breaker and will get you wet while attached to your rig when flushing/filling, and there is low water pressure available.

Arrived Wednesday 6/30. Beautiful park. Herd of Bison walked through the campground just after sunset. Steer walked through the campsite in the morning. New bathrooms with running water and flush toilets but no showers. Potable water available. Two sites were still open in the morning.

Lots of pull through sites in lovely location. We are 51 foot when attached and had plenty of room. Friendly helpful host and ranger talk was interesting. I would stay here to see the southern unit and skip the tourist trap Medora, even with a 52 mile drive.
