Great road to drive around the National Park. Campsites in Joshua Tree fill up quickly.
Jumbo Rocks was a fantastic place to park the RV, some sites are level and some sites are on a slight angle.
We have never seen such a beautiful sunrise in our entire camping trip.

The site also was one of the best in the campground with only one neighbor next to us at site #81, but we really didn't see them from our site. The site also backs up to the rocks/boulders with tons of places to climb around and explore. Highly recommend the campground, and especially recommend site #80.

Jumbo Rocks is awesome but no hook-ups or running water or wifi or cell coverage; dogs are allowed. Enjoy your time off the grid! We have a 26' airstream with a Tundra and found a pull-through spot with no reservations during high season. Remember to look at the little yellow tags if you don't see any sign of campers at a particular site. We found many people just forget to remove their reservation slip - that's how we got our spot. There are private bathrooms with port-a-potty toilets. There is sufficient space between each spot and all of our neighbors were super happy. There is a great family hike to Skull Rock with the trailhead right in the Jumbo Rock campground. There is also great off road biking and hiking for the non-family types like myself. We went in mid-April and the weather was awesome...warm in the day (70F) with lots of wind and a little chilly in the evening. You go here for the rock formations, hiking and nature. You won't be disappointed with the campgrounds. They are very well cared-for. Trash and bathrooms cleaned daily.

We arrived before noon and we were not the last spot to be had, but close to it for our size (we are well over the recommended 30' combined length). Definitely a great spot in a magical place,...but a little tight to be driving around looking for a spot to make it five stars for me. I am yet to be a fan of walk in only campgrounds, but figuring out slowly! The last night I think the nearby marine base was doing night drills for an hour or so. Vault toilets were fine, but needed some cleaning.

We stayed here in February. We came into the park initially on a Saturday and Jumbo Rocks was full so we headed down to the south end of the park to Cottonwood Campground for a couple of nights. We came back to Jumbo Rocks on Monday morning and there were several spots available. So if you can avoid coming in on the weekend you'll have a much better chance of finding a site. We've stayed at this campground several times and in our opinion it's the prettiest and best located of the Joshua Tree campgrounds. Of course lots of other people feel the same way about it so it can be hard to get into Jumbo Rocks since it's first come, first served.
Although there are a lot of sites, there are only a few that can accommodate big rigs and those are really just wide spots in the road so you will feel like you're camping in the road itself if you take one of those. Other sites offer a little more privacy, but be prepared to have a view of your neighbors. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. There are vault toilets and trash dumpsters but no other amenities. Make sure you come in with the water you need because there is NO water in the campground.

We scoped it out on a Friday without the trailer, and came in on a Tuesday when it was much mellower and easy to snag a spot.
You can loop together a good 5+ mile hike by crossing the road from the campground and stitching together the Skull Rock, Discovery, Face Rock and Split Rock loops if you're just stopping through and want to stay hitched.

The campsites are jammed in together, with your neighbors right on top of you. Our 16 foot campervan fit ok in a parking spot, and I saw some longer rigs squeezed into sites, but I'm not quite sure how they managed it.
Pit toilets were filled to the brim, and there was trash everywhere. Trash cans are available but no other amenities.
I know, I know. It's a $15 campsite in the middle of a beautiful national park. And truly, the scenery was worth it. But as far as campsites go, this is one I doubt I'll be returning to. There are other quieter, more spacious campsites in and just outside of Joshua Tree.

We seriously lucked out and got a sweet spot at the very far end of the campground. It's first come first serve here, best advice is to arrive mid-week. Campers were driving through all day and late into the evening looking for sites ... it's VERY popular, be warned.

***RV CAMPING REVIEW!!!***
We pulled into this National Park on a whim in October of 2016 on a Sunday afternoon, and were directed to Jumbo Rocks campground by one of the rangers. We have a 32ft fifth wheel and a long bed truck, and headed in through the West Entrance Station (we were driving eastbound on the I-10 and we followed the signs for Joshua Tree NP, which took us to the West entrance, when we left we drove down all the way through the park an exited at Cottonwood Springs, which you could just as easily enter through as well). It’s a bit of a drive and the map they give you is a hair confusing - but just stick on the main road until you see the signs for the campground. There are a TON of sites in this spot and the views are AMAZING!!! The map they give you doesn’t actually show you the layout of the campground but everywhere you go does eventually end up a loop or circle, so figure you can drive around for awhile and find the perfect spot without getting stuck (there are a lot of gorgeous sites). There were also a lot of other smaller campers and tons of people in tents!
It did take us awhile to find a spot that would fit our entire rig (we eventually settled in site #71) and wow are we glad we decided to stay. We barely fit into this spot though, so if you’re bigger than we are you may want to look into Cottonwood Springs (the RV specific camping area which you can reserve ahead of time online some months of the year for $20/night). This is a first-come, first-serve campground where you can’t reserve anything ahead of time. Jumbo rocks costs $15/night (make sure you have exact cash as you will put your money in an envelope at the front of the campground, and a pen to fill out the envelope with) gets you an amazing view with a fire pit and no hook ups, it was worth every cent! They have some pretty stinky pit toilets, no showers and no water. It was so quiet in the park, it’s a big enough area that there you can walk all over and see so many gorgeous rocks and views.
Skull Rock Hike also begins right in the campground with amazing views and a fairly flat walk (we wore our daughter on our backs and it worked great). Lots of pavement for bike-riding, huge rocks to climb and a lot of fun areas to explore. Amazing dark skies and night filled with stars under a campfire made this campground one of our favorite spots to go, we are already trying to plan our return trip! I highly recommend it here!!

I would say this is the best site in the campground! Our truck and camper fit perfectly into the pull off and behind us on 3 sides were hillsides. So we had a very private and quiet spot. However, we were there on a busy holiday weekend and there was a continual parade of cars driving through the campground. It was quite relentless, continuing into the night, when there were at least a dozen cars driving through after midnight. I think this would be a 4 or 5 star during the week. There is cell service 4 miles down the road toward Cottonwood.
