We were just there a few weeks ago and people were having campfires (we did not have one). From what I’ve read on the BLM website, it appears that they are allowed with a permit. Here are a few links. One for the BLM Palm Springs district restrictions and the other to the online permit application. https://www.blm.gov/programs/public-safety-and-fire/fire-and-aviation/regional-info/california/fire-restrictions#Palm Springs https://www.readyforwildfire.org/permits/campfire-permit/

While campfires are allowed, there could also be a fire ban. Just because other people have fires doesn’t mean it’s OK. That being said, this area does require a permit. You must go online the read their specific rules and take a test.

What I recall is fire was allowed only in metal device like backpacking device. This rule might be overruled lately due to dry conditions and no open fire in a lot of parks in California in general. I must say I saw fire remains/ashes but there is just no stopping a breeze to catch nearby shrubs that I myself would feel comfortable having but a very small fire. Was surprised how much vegetation I found around the site.

Yes, when I was there in November. Check with the local BLM office but I’m sure it’s fine.

Yes campfires are allowed. I've stayed at Joshua Tree South a few times over the past few years, and have had campfires there. I would advise to use a metal container (like washing machine tub, fire ring, etc) because the wind can blow pretty hard out there and send embers flying everywhere.

Yes, and most areas have fire rings established by previous campers… You will want to buy local firewood to keep the local burn local.
