Wife and I rolled into this area off of 199 around 7 PM. At the Illinois river crossing we noticed a few beat up cars.. a couple tenths of a mile up we passed the campground which looked cramped and full, so we drove another tenth of a mile up the Forest Service road and turned right. A little ways down this road there was a wooded area with a couple of small pads for tent camping so we pulled in and offloaded. About an hour later I was sipping some wine when my wife mentions there is a man walking up the road. He gets to our camp and asks for some water so I give him some. He explains while waving his gnarled knife that he’s been living in the woods panning for gold flakes, that he’s been to prison, offers me weed, and asks if I have any meth all within a span of about 5 minutes. Needless to say we packed up and headed out. An unpleasant experience I wouldn’t want anyone else to have to endure.. the whole stretch of 199 to the South of Grants Pass to the CA border is rough.. lots of poverty.
