“Clean and quiet”

Reviewed Jan 03, 2018

Overall Rating

Sites are well spaced, the campground is clean and trash free. Several campers here each night, even in January. Fantastic sunset views. You need to work to get level on some sites, but it's worth it. Short hikes from the campground, found an old homestead. Watch for thorns in dog paws! Verizon service was always available, but var... more

“Great Camping Near Acoma Pueblo”

Reviewed Apr 25, 2017

Overall Rating

Stayed two nights at Joe Skeen as a basecamp for exploring Acoma Pueblo and the surrounding landscape. Joe Skeen campground is in El Malpais National Monument. When I was visiting (April 2017) the visitor center was indefinitely closed. That makes it a bit harder to find information about hiking in the area. Maybe budget cuts? T... more

I wanted to add my thoughts on this campground. it is all the above that the other campers described. it is a great place to camp and very clean and has all the things you need. one thing that I did not know and wished that I had was just up the road toward the Ranger station was a turn off to Sandstone bluff road. If you take that roa... more

“Nice campsites in a beautiful area.”

Reviewed Mar 27, 2017

This campground is about 12 miles from I-40. We arrived in the evening to a beautiful sunset and an almost-full campground (Monday night 3/20/17)! The road into the campground has a dip, and a very large RV rig with a Jeep in tow was having trouble. They thought they'd have to unhitch their Jeep to make it through the dip; they neve... more

Almost missed the small sign to this campground, really glad I found it and it was one of the nicest places I stayed on my nine day exploring New Mexico. I am a photographer and enjoyed seeing the sunset and sunrise from this park. After staying in National Forest campgrounds I really appreciated having a picnic table, small shelter, f... more

“Good”

Reviewed Apr 25, 2016

Nice place. Quiet. Scenic. Clean vault toilets.

A little confusion from neighbors who moved tents behind our trailer but camp hosts (Mike and Jane) were helpful and neighbors played nice.

Often windy days but nights calm down around sundown.

“Great views, quiet, HIGH elevation”

Reviewed Mar 24, 2016

This BLM campground is solid. There are pull-through spots mostly, with a couple back-ins. There are 10 spots total. We didn't have a problem fitting our 28' fifth wheel and truck in, and anything bigger would be able to find a spot or two to fit them. Each spot has a concrete pad and a covered picnic table and fire ring. This is ritzy... more

Thanks to Campendium for informing me of this free camping not far out of El Malpais National Monument! Even though the campground has less than a dozen sites, more than half were available when we arrived on a Sunday afternoon. All sites are spaced 50 yards from each other, except for sites 6 & 7 which share the same parking pad. S... more
