Island Bar Recreation Site

Nice camping spot along the Salmon River. 6-8 spots with fire rings and picnic tables or choose anyplace in the dispersed camping area. One porta-potty for everyone, so if additional ones are not added during the summer, might have to wait in line. NO CELL SERVICE. All in all a great Boondocking spot for those who are fine with roughing it.

We headed here after checking out Shorts Bar a couple of miles west. This place is much better. Multiple large, level sites with good separation between. Several had fire pits and picnic tables.

Access a little bumpy but not difficult, like a rough cobblestone road. Very quiet; the only noise was the occasional boat on the river. There is one portable toilet available, which we didn't use.

ATT cell service was minimal; we could text but not send photos.

This was a PERFECT boondocking spot for a couple nights - and we could've stayed longer. It is paved to the entrance, and then there is a bit of a tight turn to the left as you enter onto the bar. Then you have to bump over about 300 yards of river rock - not too difficult, as long as you go slowly. We set up on the far end beside a table & fire ring, near the sandy peninsula where you can swim in the Salmon River. It was so quiet and comfortable, and close to Riggins if you need gas or food. There were 6-8 other fire rings to choose from as well.
