“South Padre Oceanfront Park...”

Reviewed Jun 06, 2017

Overall Rating

Isla Blanca Park is a huge RV park occupying the entire southern tip of South Padre Island. It offers oceanfront and shipping channel views with the jetty separating the two. Folks were fishing, surfing, and, of course, enjoying the beach. The sand this far south is much more sugary than the northern Texas coast. It sort of reminds me of the beaches of Destin, but more finely ground than the white sands of the Florida panhandle.

The check-in center is in a smallish building about 300-500 yards before the park entrance on the right. If you're eyeballing the Shlitterbahn Waterfront Resort on the left, you'll pass it by and have to make a u-turn at the park gate (like I did). They'll give you paper gate tickets at check-in to get you into the gate (the gate pass is part of the rate). There's a $3 service up-charge for using plastic, vice cash.

Many, if not most, of the RV's parked seem to be permanently so... like mobile vacation homes. Several no longer looked road-worthy. We pulled in without reservations and managed to get a site (full hookups) close to the beach for the night. The much smaller KOA is just down the street, as are several highly rated (by tripadvisor) restaurants. You can walk to some. I ate at the Sea Ranch (an easy walk from the park) and enjoyed the dinner there.

Mosquitos... they were atrocious, to say the least. If the sun went behind the clouds or, heaven-forbid, down, they came out in droves. It's been a wet spring and early summer for Texas this year, and the island is part of the Rio Grande river valley area, so I'll try to temper my judgement on this matter. However, I saw no evidence that the city, county, or state officials were trying to help correct this menace. When the sun was out, simply spraying some of the shadowy areas near shelters would have killed literally hundreds of thousands of the little blood-sucking, disease-transmitting hypodermic needles with wings. They made using park restroom facilities impossible. They made enjoying evening walks on the beach or through the park without Deep-Woods Off impossible. They were the principal reason I only stayed for one night - my original plan was two.

South Padre is effectively a one-road town... with the park at one end, and a desolate road ending in sand dunes at the other end with a lot of touristy stuff to the south, closer to the RV park. To the north you can drive on the ocean and bayside beaches. At night, traffic is at a dead stop trying to cross the bridge to the mainland, so staying on the island was a relief when done taking in all the attractions for the day (save the mad dash to the trailer to avoid the mosquitos).

“Beautiful Park, Super Close to the Beach!”

Reviewed Apr 17, 2017

Overall Rating

We stayed at Isla Blanca Park for the month of January which made the rate quite a bit cheaper than if you are just passing through. It is a beautiful place that is well maintained with very easy beach access. Make a note that the office to check-in is a couple hundred yards before the park entrance. We found out the hard way that if you miss it it's a bit of a pain to turn around and head back to it towing a camper.
