Indiana Dunes State Park Campground

This State campground is on the west shore of the magnificent Michigan lake. The Park is part of a broader area known the Indiana Dunes National Park a stunning natural reserve along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. We stayed there for two nights. Too short to really explore the area, but enough for a stay without water and sewer at the site. The campground and our site were beautiful nicely shaded, fairly spacious and leveled. Our site 93 was one of the best. I was very excited that there was a hiking trail right from our campground: Trail number 4 described as moderate and only of a mile. We've camped in some state parks that were far more rustic and rough than this. Very nice all around. Smooth roads, easy dump station, nice back in spot that's very easy to get into because of the way it's double-wide paved for the first half. The extra paved area also gives you a place to park a vehicle. Great walk to the beach, with a great restaurant and more casual diner window, plus convenience store, all in the large building on the beachfront. The sand dune hikes are fabulous! Look up the 3 Dune Challenge, I had a blast with it!

We stayed here for a few nights on the 4th of July and it was a great campground. Very clean facilities, easy to access fill station on your way in and dump station on your way out. Our only complaint would be that they don't have a campground entrance separate from the park, so if you leave the park you have to wait in line with everyone trying to get in. It was a holiday weekend and we saw this line as long as two hours on the 4th, but on weekends it got long too.

Also, cell service here is almost non-existent on both Verizon and AT&T.

We stayed at 4 different state parks across MI and IN during a 10 day trip. This was by far the most organized. They had numerous people directing traffic to keep things moving. They also give you a tag you need to turn in on your way out so that when if you pull in early, they ready know if your site is open. Great views from the beach but it was one of the busier beaches we visited. Still a must stop.

Really love the hiking opportunities and educational information right from the campground. The campsites don’t have much privacy and I imagine the campground is almost always full. I made our reservation 6 months ahead for the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend, and got the last available site! The picnic tables are quite small, likely built for 2 (especially if you’re using it for cooking). The bath house is nice, and pretty clean.

Really nice sites. Larger than your standard state park. Lots of hiking trails with various degrees of difficulty. Electric at site but no water. There are 2 water dispensers at the entrance. We had a primo site but bet during the summer, especially the weekends, it would be a different story. Next to the playground but there is shrubbery so you aren’t staring at it. The raccoons are obviously fed by campers. We had one walk right into the site in the middle of the afternoon. We shooed it away but the neighbor fed it. One con… we have dogs and put out fencing around the steps to the rv so they can have free run. We looked at their site when booking and saw nothing about it. Got a knock on the door at 8pm saying they were not allowed and had to come down. Apparently it’s on the Indiana State Park site but not individual campground sites.

An outstanding campground all the way around! Sites were concrete and extremely level. Plenty of space to spread out with a nice firepit and picnic table. Electric sites only bud washrooms easily accessible from everywhere in the campground. Washrooms and showers were nice and large. And trails leading to the dunes right from the camping areas! Can’t wait to go back next spring!
