Cell... Verizon can be sketchy if caravan camps near tower on I-8. Otherwise, 5 G,5 bars. T Mobile FANTASTIC.
Clean, quiet, pick your heaven, very accessible. Perfect for all winter long camping. Pets have loads of room to run free. Seen 2 tarantulas.
Let's talk about the wind. Oh yeah, be ready to listen to, deal with hi, sustained wind...and dust. But, warm! Nights can get into low 40s, but days lows are in 60s.

We found the best free campsite in Southern California. In this video, we show you the best free campsite in Southern California. Located on BLM land in Imperial County, California we found a big rig friendly campsite with blazing fast cellular service and great digital TV reception. This was our second visit to this awesome boondocking location in Southern California. We camped here in 2019 and again in 2022. It truly is the best free campsite we have found in Southern California. Verizon cellular service clocked in at 107 Mbps download speed and 6.04 Mbps upload speed. AT&T cellular service clocked in at 148 Mbps download speed and 14.6 Mbps upload speed. T-Mobile cellular service clocked in at 30.8 Mbps download speed and 3.72 Mbps upload speed.

I was able to get 142Mbps download and 15Mbps upload using AT&T with my Insty Connect. T-Mobile was also good but not close to the speed I got with AT&T. I see towers on the hill a few miles to the north so that's the reason for such a good connection.
We parked near the entrance again because of a short trip but I drove many miles down the road to check it out. You can get an RV down the road just fine if you take it slow. Great place to check out the night sky. It is dark and quiet at night. We saw only 3 other campers in the entire area. This place just does not get used very much.

This is a flat open area right at Ogilby Rd and Indian Pass Rd with 360 degree views. We were surprised at how much bigger this area is than we expected. Indian Pass Rd is 17 miles long and my understanding is that you can park anywhere within 300' of the road for up to 14 days on the BLM land. Spent 2 nights in early January with sunny skies, 70 degrees, and a light wind. We only saw one other camper about 1/2 mile away otherwise we had the place to ourselves and a few off road travelers coming by during the day. Nice view of Picacho Peak in the distance. Super quiet at night, only light traffic on Ogilby rd. We would probably move down a little farther next time so we are not as close to the main road.
There is so much open area here that you could easily park a thousand RV's. This place is huge. It is very open so you just have to pick a spot in the gravel where you like but it if hard packed and very flat so anyplace is fine even for big rigs. I suspect it could get very windy since there is no natural wind block through the area.
We had good cell phone reception with 3 bars for both T-Mobile and AT&T. We got 8Mpbs download with T-Mobile and 6Mbps with AT&T.

The El Centro, CA Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Office has completed their motor vehicle use map for Eastern Imperial County, CA. Consequently, new restrictions significantly limit the area available for RV camping in the Ogilby Road BLM area. After two days of scouting the Ogilby Road BLM 14-day free camping areas, I found this great boondocking location that meets the new restrictions of 300 feet within a designated route. It is pertinent to note that traveling cross country over non-designated routes with a motor vehicle is prohibited; see photo of Limited Use Area signs currently posted along Ogilby Road. RV camping off of BLM Route 649 is big rig friendly and has prominent mountain views, a hard packed level gravel surface, great cellular service, and easy access off of Ogilby Road adjacent the intersection of Indian Gap Road. Grid coordinates for this free camping location are 32.9375200, -114.8709869. The area can accommodate numerous RVs of any size. Verizon cellular service clocked in at 42.3 Mbps download speed and 4.1 Mbps upload speed. AT&T clocked in at 1.39 Mbps download speed and 1.20 Mbps upload speed. We had a relaxing time camping at this location.
