Do not drive or park on non-durable surfaces; it kills the vegetation. (ie do not park down in the beautiful grass area even if you have horses and think you’re doing something good. You are actually causing lasting damage.) Vault toilets are well maintained. No Verizon cell signal.

The weather in early May was cold and snowy over the passes from Ely. Some of the sites at the campground had shelters wit wind breaks around them. It was clean and basic but a welcome reprieve from some nasty weather.

Windy but beautiful spot off highway 50. Would stay here again. Fire rings and picnic tables. Some spots have fenced shelters from the wind. Garbage cans for trash available. Maybe if you angled your car to protect from the wind…

We stayed here overnight on our way to Great Basin National Park, and wish we could have stayed longer. We were driving through some of the upper sites which were all full when we were flagged down by a local who was a regular at this campground. He was just down fishing and told us about this open site down by the water. It was a perfect site with a great view of the water, and more private that the upper level sites. The only downside was no shade structure, but the weather was beautiful. Our site was reasonably close to a clean pit toilet as well. highly recommended for an overnight or few day stay.

The road going in was easy. We picked a spot on the top part of the camping area at the very end, our site was rocky. We had a view of the whole canyon, lake and mountains. No shade or trees.. There was trash pick up and vaulted toilets. There were wild horses that would graze in the valley, just amazing. We saw a bald eagle catch fish right from the lake. There was a table and wind break, which you needed! My husband caught his limit of trout daily which we ate, so delicious. We had rain storms come through almost daily. The wind got to be too much as it blew sand everywhere. There is a ghost town we visited in Hamilton about 10 miles away. It was incredible and the history amazing. We visited a mine which had such history of our decendants that worked so hard and it was worth the drive. Ely was 40 miles away and they have the best laundromat I've ever seen with on-site help and lots of shopping. We would come back again.

Plus you are allowed to boondock anywhere if the campsites are full. Great views of the desert and Illipah reservoir. This is a good spot for OHV if you have them too. The reservoir is stocked with trout, so bring your fishing gear and license. Lures or fly fishing work well here. Kayaked around the reservoir too. I would love to spend more than one night here. Amazing sunsets, and the star viewing is spectacular.
I guess the only negatives are that there is no cell service. There are wind screens for a reason, but there was no significant wind while we were there.

But the wind is bad, the waves on the reservoir are pretty rough, and there is absolutely NO cell service, both Verizon and T-Mobile. Would not be able to stay here and work.

We stayed here in Mid-June 2019 in our 35ft Class A. Entrance road has some wet spots, but nothing to worry about. If there's been big rains, I'd stay away from here. We had no Verizon signal at all, but did not 'shop' the area to see if we could find some signal. One night, who cares? Absolutely a great spot on an otherwise lonely road.
