“Beautiful campground but too many mosquitos”

Horseshoe is a nice, small, quiet campground. Camp mostly in Colorado so we are not used to swarms of mosquitos. Part of the problem may have been that our fire pit was a solid metal container so it held 2-3" of water which I'm sure attracted all the bugs. Because of that we couldn't have a fire at all. The other problem was that the campground advertised that there was water available but it was one ancient water pump that would have taken 15 minutes of pumping to get 1 gal. of water. The camp hosts were very nice. Too many nice campgrounds in Colorado to get eaten alive by mosquitos (and yes, we did use spray). Just wanted to warn folks to bring your own water and LOTS of bug spray. Also...7 mile very bumpy dirt road to access campground.

“Well Kept and Convenient to Trails”

First, let me say that I researched the area primarily for dispersed camping and only checked this campground out as a fallback option. Boy, am I glad I did! Our first night out at nearby dispersed camping near 182b was ruined by a large group of party-going big rigs, their ATV's and shooting. After the first night, we fled to Horseshoe Campground, which had a good site left at 3 pm on a Saturday in August. Horseshoe is very well kept, the camp hosts are friendly and helpful, and ATV's are not allowed in the campground.
Most sites are shaded, and although the pad is close to the campground loop road, there is lots of wooded open space behind the site. Pit toilets are immaculate (for a pit toilet, anyway).
The Limber Grove trailhead takes off from the campground, and there are two other trails leading up to Sheep Mountain at the campground.
There is an open meadow near the water pump which is great for star gazing!
