Horse Canyon Road Dispersed Camping

I opted to try the area behind the rest stop and I drove all the way down to the fork (4ish miles) without seeing a good spot. There’s plenty of little roads coming off the main road but I didn’t want to wander down not knowing if it was safe for me and my 26’ TT. Ended up finding a spot only about 1/2 mile from the rest stop right off the road, which I wasn’t crazy about. I started wandering around with my dogs and found a person car camping way tucked away that gave homeless/long term vibes and kinda creeped me out. If I were passing through again, I would try the area opposite the rest stop.

Beautiful views, very quiet. Close to the highway but no sounds. We saw two RVs far away. We couldn’t find the spots with fire pits so we drove on the dirt road, took a left on a very old asphalt road and found some tracks on the left to park a little out of the way. We didn’t see anyone and it was very nice to take a walk on this old paved road with our dog.

The site is not marked, but it’s on the other side of the highway from the rest area. I was there all by myself. Some of the sites have fire pits. Not too much noise from the highway. Roads are a little rough, but you can stay overnight at the rest area across the highway if you like. The sign says no overnight camping, but plenty of people are sleeping in their vehicles, vans, etc. there. If you’re a van or a vehicle, don’t park in the large vehicle parking lot near the exit. If you do, when truckers come in, they’ll make sure their headlights are right on your vehicle, and will make as much noise as possible. Go further in and park near the bathrooms.

We stayed here for the night and it was very easy to find. We pulled in around 7:45pm. We went across the highway from the Rest Stop, so we were closer to the road (evidentially those spots are 3/5 miles down the road). There are obvious spots starting pretty close to the highway and more further back. The spots are well defined and most have rock fire rings. Easy to maneuver in and out, some spots make a full circle so getting a large vehicle in and out would be easy. We stayed in the 3rd spot in from the road, traffic was not too distracting and around 4:45am you could hear a train in the distance.

I’ve read all these reviews and everybody keeps saying that if you’re coming from price when you get here, make the left and go past the gate and go down for 5 miles. I can also say that if you want to go to the right, you can also do that when you come to the cattleguard the very first campsite to your right it might be a little tough getting in and maneuvering around but what have you and its level. I go to Oregon quite often and I usually stop somewhere on the way back home and this will be my go to spot from now on.
