We originally were going to stay over night because we were going to Mitchell Caverns the next day (Saturday) but when we arrived the scenery was so beautiful, that we stayed for a week. Our cost was only $6.00 because we were able to use our America the Beautiful card. We stayed in campsite #4 which was large enough for our 28ft fifth wheel and F250 truck with plenty of room left over. The campsites were very spacious and spread enough apart that you were not sitting on top of each other and each campsite had a fire ring.. The campground and vault toilets were very clean an well maintained.
We took a couple of walks on the trails and the views were spectacular! The weather was bi polar but did we expect in early March!
The campground does provide potable water throughout the campground as well as a dump station and trash dumpsters. We have put this campground on our list to go back and visit in fall!

This gem of a campground sits at 4400’ elevation in the high desert within the Mojave National Preserve. Access from I-40 is paved, good condition. Access from I-15 not recommended due to washed out roads. Sites vary from tent only to pull throughs. Road within the campground is mostly gravel and rutted asphalt but any vehicle or RV can negotiate it. Starkly beautiful landscape of volcanic mesas looks like you’re on Mars. Dark skies make for star gazing although light from Las Vegas is visible on the horizon. Temps were pleasant mid-50’s to low 60’s daytime in mid November, dropping into 30’s at night. It was really cold and windy during our stay. I’d recommend early to mid October or late Spring as best time to visit. Mitchell Caverns is a nearby attraction but more reservations required. Campground has dump station. Visitor center open weekends only, no food or supplies of any kind, bring credit or debit card. Potable water, vault toilets in campground. Flush potties at visitor center. Cell service is available but spotty. AT&T 4 bars, Verizon zero bars at upper section of campground. Great hikes. Think Joshua Tree without the crowds.

We made the trek out to Hole-in-the-Wall at Mojave National Preserve for one night. It was a much longer dirt road than I had imagined and you go up in elevation. It took almost a half-hour to get to the campground from Cedar Canyon Road.
This is a First Come, First Served NPS campground. We started the loop a little worried because every site was tagged, but by the time we got back over to the first loop, we had our pick of sites. We chose 16 because of the great view and it being directly next to the pit toilet. (The cleanest pit toilet I’ve ever seen)! The campground also has potable water, plenty of dumpsters and a dump station.
We wanted to stay here because we were finishing off our trip the next morning at the Hole-in-the-Wall Visitor Center. It is directly next door, you can even see the lot from the campground.
This was a great place to stay, but maybe it would have been more worth it to stay at least a couple nights. I definitely didn’t realize the trek it was to get here, from the main part of the park. Everything is super spread out at Mojave.

Potable water stations, we filled our jugs to refill the RV. Pit toilets, dumping station. Screaming fast internet - I had 60Mbps with my verizon hotspot; I could not get connection with AT&T. CAUTION: This area is subject to high winds - last night our van was buffeted all night long; gusts had to be 40mph+ (I verified this morning's forecast and it's the same); we lost one of our mats, nowhere to be found; nearby tents were getting flattened by the high winds. The road is paved up to this campground, then turns to dirt. This is a first come first serve campground; we were here during spring break, arrived on a Thursday at 1pm and probably half the campsites were still open. Even on Saturday spots were open. There is dry camping on some side roads also, we noticed RVs during our hike.

There is a very clean dump station and fresh water spigots scattered throughout the campground. We had decent verizon service that we were able to boost and get consistent internet to work during the day. Overall, a very nice place if you are looking to camp in Mojave.

It was very windy/gusty when we were there in late March/early April 2021 - actually destroyed some tents. The winds kicked up late at night and we were very concerned about lingering embers from un-drowned campfires would blow into the bushes and set the whole desert on fire.
Although high winds and 5% relative humidity were forecast (which would have been Red Flag Warnings elsewhere), we were disappointed that there was no notice to suspend campfires, no host and no ranger or fire station personnel presence (from station just across the road) warning about fires. One stray ember from any of the 35 campsites could have rapidly caused a conflagration. Very Irresponsible management IMO.
Had 1 Verizon bar, but wasn't useful; usually No Service.
Otherwise, we liked it there.

I moved here after my first night at Midhills with the hope of having a cell signal.
Hole in the Wall has beautiful views and interesting hikes you can take advantage of without getting back in your vehicle. In fact while hiking above the campsite my first night I felt like I was touring a botanical garden.
Unlike Midhills you will have no real privacy. You can see everyone. This site hosts large vehicles and RVs, so there is more noise. Also there are families with kids so you may end up next to someone loud. I contrast this with Midhills to let you know there is a more private and quiet option for you if you value privacy and quiet and are not traveling in a large vehicle. It's a family, RV oriented campground that also happens to allow tent camping.
The first night I was very happy to be able to text my wife back home, even though finding the sweetspot was hit and miss. (T-Mobile) For example, in my tent, no signal, 8-12 feet away at the picnic table, a signal strong enough for texting. Most areas of camp there was no signal, but then suddenly as I was hiking around I would get an alert of some kind letting me know that if I stopped right there I could probably send and receive a text. I suppose in a way this kind of goes against the spirit of getting away from it all, but then again it was nice to let the outside world know where I was, where I was going and to expect to hear from me upon my return.
There are no trash recepticles in the camp. You need to walk all the way out to an area you pass on the way out/in to find the dumpsters. I don't like having delicious smelling garbage anywhere near me at night so I had to walk it out there nightly.
After an unpleasantly windy first night a Midhills I was really glad to have a nice, calm gust free night. However, the second night at HITW was even worse than at Midhills. It was so bad I couldn't sleep and around midnight decided I would be better off in my car. My tent was literally collapsing all the way down over me every few minutes. It was very loud and I don't imagine anyone could have slept under those circumstances. Just after I moved my tent poles broke and one of my footlong tent nails came out of the ground. The tent was down and it stayed down. Inside the car you would never realize how violent this wind actually was. So if you're in a vehicle I wouldn't worry much about it. In a tent, who knows whether your night will be calm or turbulent? Another guy closer to the entrance had the exact same tent as I did but his withstood the lashing. I never associated gusty winds with the desert but now I know why there are so many wind turbines on Tehachepi pass.
If possible arrive via the paved Essex Rd on I-40. The dirt roads approaching camp aren't horrible but every mile feels like four and I keep expecting to have a tire blow or have a vital suspension piece fail. I actually saw a late model Honda Civic parked at Midhills which is on the way to HITW and later followed a Nissan Altima into HITW...I would NOT recommend that but I guess they made it. In fact there was a sign as Cedar Canyon Rd turns to dirt which says 4x4 only. Whenever I see 4x4 required I wonder if MY 4x4 qualifies.
Anyway I would highly recommend this campsite.
