I was in A6, which is against the dunes (which are ~12ft tall), so I could hear the surf, but not see it. There was no one within 2 sites, so it was quiet.
Friday morning, I put my name on the waitlist at 8am, I had to break down my site by 11am, and come back at 1pm to claim a site. I took J10 (which is on a bluff ~20ft above the beach and G, H and I areas). Strangely, I was offered a 2 night stay (Fri&Sat).
Beautiful views of the ocean from my tent and I could still hear the surf. Area J has the best (newest?) facilities (bathrooms, showers, sinks (kitchen and personal)). Drawback is 10 minute walk to the general store/ranger station and 5 minutes to the beach (10 to swimming area).
Almost no cell service! 2 bars was the maximum and finding that was rare. (Not enough service to get an Uber or play Spotify). There is a landline outside at the ranger’s station.
General Store closed at 3pm, but Gurney’s is 1.5 miles down the beach if you want expensive bars and restaurants.
FYI, guarded swimming area is ~100 yards wide and located next to the entrance circle

This is one of the prettiest state parks in New York. Located directly on the ocean although you can't see it from the sites in the west loop and maybe from only a couple in the east loop (the tent sites all have views). This is a great place to explore in the off season as the temps are still great in the fall. Summer can be a little crazy with all the sites filled, a lot of noise and not a ton of privacy. There is a 2 bay dump station in the east loop and water hook ups about every 3-4 sites (bring a LONG hose, we needed 125-150'). We spend two weeks here in October and had the place to ourselves with maybe 15-20 other rigs in the whole campground. There's a great general store and you are just steps to hiking and Montauk's restaurants and activities. Hard to match for the price even without any hookups. This place is magical.

Great State Park! We were there in mid-Sept and unfortunately, it rained for almost the entire time! We didnt let the weather stop us and took many walks on the beach and explored all the surrounding areas. We even managed to squeeze in a campfire inbtwn showers. FYI ... its a bring your own firepit park. We didnt know this, but luckily another camper left their pit in the recycling area & we grabbed it! We left it for someone else to enjoy ... ♻️
Our first site was right in the middle of a family reunion and they were having fun! It would have been impossible for us to camp there, but the park staff understood immediately & were able to move us to another site that was blissfully quiet even tho we had campers all around us. This park is also pet free. That makes for a nice, quiet experience right from the get-go!
Cell service was spotty. The bath house at the far west of the campground was dreadful. Old, damp & cold. We drove or biked to the beautiful new, individual bath rooms in the east campground.
Sites are tight with very little vegetation or tree coverage ... altho our site seemed to be one of the exceptions. We also parked perpendicular ... making our site a “drive-thru” since it was at the end of a loop. This afforded us a tad more privacy too! There is some highway noise but u can also hear the surf! There was quite a bit of garbage around. It WAS windy during our stay, but it looked like people needed to do a better job of taking care of their trash ... or? Creating less of it.
Also? Because there was no electricity, almost everyone used quiet generators. Most kept to the quiet hours posted.
No laundry, but a quick drive to a nice laundromat in Montauk.
It’s worth spending an entire day, outside the park, exploring all the roads south of the highway to see all the mansions & beautiful architecture! We had never seen anything like it! There are beach access parking lots thru out these various neighbourhoods. You can park & walk the beach and get an up close look at the fabulous homes!
There is also the Jackson Pollock art centre. Sadly, it was closed when we were there. Great shopping in East Hampton too. There was plenty else to see & do during our time at Hither Hills State Park. I bet this park wpuod be very noisy during peak season.
If the weather had been better, we probably would have enjoyed more beach activity. Maybe next time!

$66 is a lot for dry camping, but it's very close to the beach (we could hear it faintly at night) and Montauk. A hotel here would be $400 probably. The sites are very close to each other, but we didn't mind unless someone was running their generator. The site was not too level since it was dirt and sand.
It's a big park that's fun to walk around in as most people sit out. The beach was not crowded at all because it was only in the 70's.
The showers were the best I've ever seen in a campground. Private and fairly new.

We travel with ebikes and it was a 20 minute pedal to Montauk, and only 5 minutes to a clam shack.
Road noise from the old Montauk Highway mixes with the surf sounds...not bad.
No hook-ups.
