Highway 385 Picnic Area

stayed here the night of 1/21/2023. rolled in about 4am after shooting night photography in the chisos and this site says it holds 4 and if its all RVs, thats true. i was in an suv and there was 3 RVs already there and i had just enough room to comfortably fit (stayed here one night in 2021, rolled up at 7-8am and had the place to myself). if its all suvs/cars, 5 or 6 could easily fit. basic picnic area with 2 covered picnic tables and trash bins. i think i remember a little service, but can't remember for sure, so i'll leave that off. worst thing about this spot is there is no bathrooms anywhere nearby. closest one is into marathon, and i'm not sure if anything there has 24h access. it is noisy - right on 385 and the night i was there one rv ran a generator all night.

This was our first overnight at a picnic area and we were worried our trailer would be too big or putting the slide out would be breaking a rule. Our trailer didn’t fit the descriptions on the “not allowed” sign. We put our jack stands down and slide out 1/2 way out just to have room to move inside. Went to sleep and around 11ish my daughter yells out that there is a police truck outside. I run out and turns out that a car broke down nearby and the sheriff was trying to find them to help. Cleared the air quick and he left. But either way that gave us our answer that we weren’t breaking any rules. So a 28’ TT (33’ total) is okay to park at this spot. A few other vehicles joined us throughout the night. Great place for sunsets after a long day in Big Bend.
