Are 30+ foot RVs able to navigate pet loop? All are marked 15-20 foot equipment despite 30-40 foot driveways

What would be a good loop/site for one person car camping? I’m also open to the park and walk option.

A few spots looked better but hard to tell when picking on the PA reservation site. Dog had fun swimming while hiking the Shadow of Death trail. Overall a good relaxing weekend. Great spot if you have kids. Lots riding bikes around the loop having fun. Had a couple bars on the cell and could text. Couldn’t stream though if that’s important to you.

Had a relaxing weekend but felt jammed in with this spot. Shadow of death trail was very nice. Lots of swimming for the pup. We went early to avoid the crowds. A few trailheads were packed with people late morning. There were a few sites on the pet loop that would have been better. Overall a good weekend.

On our 78-mile travel day from French Creek State Park to Hickory Run State Park we detoured to the birthplace of Daniel Boone. Unfortunately Bob the Dog has been sick for the last three days with diarrhea and who knows what. Having a sick dog and torrid temps made the hiking much harder than usual. But it was good to see the house where Daniel was born and learn that Squire Boone built it.
We took every backroad imaginable during our drive to Hickory Run. Not by choice, but what the Google navigator provided. But the scenery was worth it even though the trip was slow and a bit stressful. By the time we made it to Hickory Run Bob the dog was on his last legs. He couldn’t even get out of the truck or stand on his own legs. We must have called at least a dozen veterinarians and dog hospitals and nobody would take him or even offer to help. They all reported being all booked up or not taking any new clients. We were at a loss for what to do. Meanwhile we made Bob as comfortable as we could, kept giving him water hoping he was merely dehydrated from the heat and diarrhea and his electrolytes badly in need of replenishing. Our plans for exploring the interesting town of Jim Thorpe and viewing the waterfalls around this park were in jeopardy.
Check-in was a breeze, but a warning was made that the bears were active. We were informed that two bears were consistent visitors to the campground looking for food. It is bewildering to us why campers think they can feed and pet the bears. Our site #169 was pet-friendly with electricity only. A water spigot was directly across from us. The central restroom was a cut-through alongside the site across from us. The dump station and dumpsters were on the way out. AT&T provided an adequate two bars of LTE (4-G). Our costs averaged $35 per night and we spent our first night in worrisome, but air-conditioned, concern for our beloved pet. Taking Bob the dog out to pee-pee in the dark at 3 AM was a bit apprehensive due to the warning regarding the active bears.
The story behind the making of this park is rather interesting. In 1875, the Great Fire began near Mud Run and smoldered for several days moving north to Monroe County. The fire damaged timber and destroyed many mills and houses. The town of Hickory Run began to dwindle. Today, the Manor House and the chapel are the only structures that remain from the old town of Hickory Run. Other traces of the town include a cemetery, foundations, and roads. Forest fires continued raging and floods carried away soil. Not since the time of the glacier had the land been so devastated.
In 1918, Allentown millionaire General Harry Trexler began purchasing land in the area, including the land that would become Hickory Run State Park. The boundaries of his land are the boundaries of the park today. The General purchased the land with one purpose:
“We are only a short distance from the anthracite coal region where there is scarcely a blade of grass growing. In the not too distant future, the men will be working shorter hours and they will have more leisure time. Rather than have them loafing in pool rooms and saloons fomenting anarchism, I would like to see Hickory Run developed into a state park where families can come and enjoy wholesome recreation.”
Unfortunately, we would not be afforded the pleasure of exploring the park and waterfalls or even the Swiss-like mountain town of Jim Thorpe. Upon rising we had to pack up and leave another day early. Bob the Dog seemed to be dying. We finally found a veterinarian who would see him if we could get to our next destination in Great Barrington by 3:30 PM. It wasn’t easy, but we did make it. Again, more back roads. Our Google navigator made decisions that were not in our best interests. Though beautiful, the topography is not recommended for anybody needing to be somewhere at a specific time. There were a couple detours due to the current flooding plus we managed to get on the Taconic State Parkway which is a no-no for trucks and trailers. A very nice and understanding New York State Police cop pulled us over, met the distressed Bob the Dog, did not ticket us, and gave us the best route for getting to Great Barrington as quickly as possible.

We came in October of 2021 - our first trip with our new to us TT. We came in during a Nor’easter so everything was swamped but the sun came out the next day and everything was beautiful especially the fall colors. The location is great to explore the Poconos and nearby locations like the rock field. The campground was very quiet which we appreciate. We were there during the week so it was pretty empty. The campsite was spacious and level. There is not a lot of privacy but enough room between campers to be happy.

We had a FHU site that was level and spacious. Plenty of space between sites but close to 534 which was a little noisy. Woke up to snow on Sunday morning (it was Thanksgiving weekend). Definitely go on the Hawk Falls hike and explore the Boulder Field.

This is a great campground in an awesome part of Pennsylvania. The campground is beautiful and our section of the park near site 380 which is the FHU section was spacious and roomy. In fact there is a huge circular field with nothing but a swing set in it right in the middle of the all the campsites. Our cell service was not the greatest, but we got plenty of OTA TV Channels. The park is about 30 minutes or so from Wilkes Barre, PA which would be the largest big city. It is about 20 minutes from the interesting historic town of Jim Thorpe, PA which has tons of fun stuff to see and do, including a scenic railway line through the Lehigh Valley. There are many hiking trails in this beautiful Pocono setting. We arrived from the east (NY, NJ, Conn) and took I-80 to PA 534 as advised by the park. The drive was no problem. There is one switchback at an intersection with River Rd. which would be blind around the bend but there is a nice 4 way stop there making it completely safe. There is also a short 14 percent grade on PA 534 but it was a very short stretch of road (maybe a quarter mile tops) and it is well signed. We had no problem going up or down with our truck and 35 foot fifth wheel. I was all set to give this park a glowing 5 stars but had to deduct one because I stopped in the restroom just before we pulled out at about 10 am and it was a smelly mess, I don’t believe it had been cleaned in the past day or perhaps more. So glad I only had to use it one time. Other than that if you are self contained it is a great five star park!

Our site was fairly level with good space for our 22 ft TT. Unfortunately this site was a little exposed on one side. The park offers hiking and not far away is access to the D&L bike trail and kayaking on the Lehigh river. Bathrooms had warm showers and were relatively clean. We would definitely stay again but not in this site since we noticed a few others in the loop that were nicer.
For those in the NY metro area, this was a quick ride west on Route 80 in the Poconos.

While you're in the neighborhood, make sure you go to Jim Thorpe for a fun, quaint downtown and hike/bike along the Lehigh Gorge (hike to okana falls!)

TP is also very low this morning. Sites are well laid out for as much privacy as possible in crowded conditions. Paved road and pad. 247 was 6-7” out of level front to back, 2” side to side. We prefer sites we can back into and have the back of the rig higher, where our heads are in bed. If that is your preference, dont reserve 245, 246, or 248. Sites we thought were pretty level and nicely situated are 274, 253, 258. Site 262 looks lovely and private, but be aware it curves to drivers side when backing up. Electric box is around curve. Fee is $35+ reservation transaction fee.
