The saguaros spend their evenings praying to the stars, unlimited pinholes poked through the black and purple sheet drooped over our campsite here in the hills. By day they wave away the sun, relentless rises and sets, the type of beauty man’s hand could never create but is so prone to destroy. They have to look upward, as much as perhaps they’d like to gaze over the palo verde and creosote laden hills, the red rock and dust that fill the space between the horizon, they simply can’t manage to muster the courage. There homeland, a dream world, a place of perfection untold, has been littered with dead pigeons, the bright orange, clay variety. More shards than stars in the sky, scattered everywhere and mixed so thoroughly with the desert floor as to be impossible to remove completely. Lonely, I suppose, they’ve invited their friends to join them, yellow plastic shotgun shells and all shapes and sizes of bullet casings. Beer cans and toilet paper, empty chip bags and cigarette butts round out the gang.

A largely unusable bar or two of Verizon makes it impossible to get lost in our phones, we watch the stars and thank silence it’s manages to slip itself in between the relentless sound of gunfire cracking through the air all day long.

As we leave, volunteer crews clean up the lower areas, hordes of police in attendance for some reason. They may be able to clean up the lower area, this BLM land apparently being a lawful place to practice your aim, but I drive away highly suspicious they’ll ever make it all the way back and into the multitude of places to camp as this road goes on for miles into the mountains.
