Only 4 sites, but out of the way enough that I had no problem getting a spot. All spots are first-come, first-serve. Payment envelopes at the kiosk on the way in, or see the camp host. The rear-most site has an awesome view over a cliff. Trash and restrooms on site.
Verizon good.
AT&T good.

Also, the highway noise after sunset did not bother us. The OHV trails made for some decent hiking.

We pulled in on a Monday afternoon in early April to find the place empty. According to the host, it gets full and busy on the weekends with OHVers. There are four campsites, two pull-throughs and two back-ins. There was plenty of room for our 34’ MOHO and attached Jeep TOAD in the last site going around the small loop. The back-in sites would have accommodated us, but we’d have had to unhook.
Be aware that there is a turn in off the highway when traveling east. I used Google Maps Satellite View to spot the access road which is an asphalt apron off the highway and then a good gravel road about 1/4-mile long to the campground. Watch for several cell and repeater towers on the north side of the highway; they are located immediately west of the entrance. Google Maps was routing me quite a ways east to make some kind of oddball turnaround south of the highway to get across and to the westbound lanes. This is TOTALLY UNNECESSARY! The paved area between the east and westbound lanes is over 100’ long and can accommodate just about any sized rig and TOAD as you setup for a left turn into the access road.
The sites are situated along the edge of an arroyo. There are beautiful expansive views to the northwest.
A new water well was drilled last fall. According to the host, the site will have water next winter.

Everything here looks brand new.
First two sites saw handicapped and have a cement path to the outhouse.
We were the only ones here in a Tuesday evening.
Plan on taking a walk tomorrow with our two new puppies.
Their is a camp host that waved to us when we entered.
The cost depended on how many in the party. We would have paid $5 but have our senior pass.
Road is good packed dirt and small stones.
The road is far enough away that you don’t hear traffic and there wasn’t much the day we arrived.

Very clean and great location. We were the only ones at the campground. You really have to appreciate the Public Lands and these sites. Although we did not have an OHV for this trip, it looks like an awesome area to ride.

Nice level site. The road in was easy to find and not too rough. It was pretty windy here, (45 mph gusts) but not at all dusty. We are 70’ long, and the sites were long enough.

From what I saw there were only a couple spots to camp with a shelter, but some people went out and did some back country camping when I was there so there’s that. There’s a couple toilets there and it’s kinda close to the highway but I wouldn’t consider it that noisy. Not too much light pollution, lots of stars!

This was a great stay for us. About 25 minutes from the heart of Roswell. Plenty of hiking to do, but be aware of OHVs that may be running. We stayed in January and it was pretty cold in the evenings and the temperature and winds may have kept a lot of the OHV crowd away. It was very quiet while we were here. There were other campers off and on and only a couple of people using OHVs. We never had issues with noise or dust, but again time of year probably played a part in that. There are 2 pit toilets that are very clean, as well as a dumpster near by. There is a camp host, but we never saw them. I don't have any OHVs but thought it was cool that there is a concert ramp to help load and unload "toys". Sites are all relatively level, I think all had their own covered picnic area, and were quite large. Sites are far away enough from eachother that the occasional generator running was barely heard. Great cell coverage.
A note on directions!!! Don't just put in Haystack OHV area in your GPS. It will come up, but may very well lead you to an old access road that won't take you here (like mine did). Use the coordinates 33.6271946, -104.2386722 to find the correct entry point. Smooth roads from there.
