Overview of Hartman Rocks Designated Dispersed Camping
Large rigs should access the area via County Road 32 and not the main entrance.
Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is located about 5 miles south of Gunnison, Colorado, and includes over 14,000 acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Gunnison Field Office. With 45 miles of single-track trail, 45 miles of roads, 50 designated dispersed campsites, and countless climbing crags, Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is a popular site for camping, rock climbing, and OHV & mountain bike trail riding. Campers should be aware that Hartman Rocks Dispersed Campsites do not have hookups or potable water (dry/primitive camping) and has no developed facilities or fees.

Let's start with the good. Free camping just outside Gunnison in a beautiful location. Plenty of sites, vault toilets, fire rings and tables. Awesome for $0.
The front side is pretty rough to access for anything off size. Getting to the top via kill hill is no joke. But once up there incline, views and sites are awesome.
The back side is easier to access ( most sites ) but typically busier and you have to share with OHVs that are running all over the place.
Noise usually drops by dark, but day is pretty constant with the sounds of 2 and 4 stroke machines.

Plenty of great camping available with great views! We entered Hartman Rocks from CR 32 and headed up BLM-32C, sketchy steep/loose hill for 2 wheel drive van! Recommend traveling further on CR32 or taking the main entrance from CR 38. Primitive camping, no hookups, a little trash noted but overall very quiet nice place to camp. Miles o... more

This place was awesome. The roads are a bit rough especially in the beginning but the views and the sites are awesome. Only downfall for us was the amount of traffic at night. People driving by very fast with music blaring and assumedly drunk up until midnight

Great dispersed camping with a lot of sites. However, there are a crazy amount of mice! Around 5 or more mice got in my van each time I stayed here, they kept me up all night long. The vans clean, with no food out and they still find a way to get in here.

Beautiful views, picnic table and fire pit is nestled in between huge boulders. Nice and clean. Came in off HWY 50. Road coming up is dirt and very uneven and full of ruts. Rough on my truck camper. Other review says rv should use Rt 30 entrance. I will exit that way and see if it's better.

There are only 8 designated spots in this area of the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area. Most of them will fit a mid to large size rig and include a picnic table (which is VERY HEAVY if you need to move it) and a fire ring. There is no dumpstation in the Rec area or Water but there are in Gunnison just 5-10 minutes away.
Currently (June 2022) the free dumpstation at the Waste Management Center is closed for renovations but they have moved a temporary one adjacent to the Sheriff Department. Here is the location: 38°32'20.5"N 106°55'53.4"W

Climbed that big hill getting in. Everything not secured ended up in back of trailer. Found the back way in by carefully studying maps and followed instructions in previous posts. Best advice: CR 32 is first left turn after Blue Mesa campground as you leave Gunnison.

Great camp sites. Most are spaced far from other sites. We camped surrounded by rocks and only visible to 1 other site that wasn't inhabited. High clearance 4x4 is recommended, but not needed for all sites. Cell signal is good in the higher areas.

When we first arrived in Gunnison in our 45ft 5th wheel toy hauler, we had planned to stay at Hartman Rocks, but we went to the main entrance (following the signs). When we first arrived in Gunnison in our 45ft 5th wheel toy hauler, we had planned to stay at Hartman Rocks, but we went to the main entrance (following the signs). This was a mistake! we ended up at the KOA for a night due to this...I went reading more of the reviews, and one guy suggested taking County Road 32 to get into the recreation area. This is the BEST way to go. You pass the main entrance with all the signs and go down hwy 50 just a few more miles (if you're heading west). There are about 5-7 pull through spots out this road once you get into the park (past the shooting range). There is also a BIG trailer turn around down there too just in case. We were able to get our 45ft 5th wheel into a spot no problem. We actually could have fit into almost all of the spots! And the views on this side of the rec area are amazing too! I think that people were also taking this entrance to get around to the main camping areas near the rocks...just to avoid that awful hill at the main entrance (just a note). BUT...there is absolutely no service on this side of the park. So, don't plan to be connected to anything while you're out here. We were able to take our RZR to the top of a few hills in the park and get some cell service in places, but not in the camping spot.

Gate was closed . Only 1 spot maybe big enough for a big rig . But I dont think so. Since gate was closed not sure about farther up. Luckily had enough room to turn around and leave. My advice have a back up plan .

Both entrances from CR32 & CR38 are closed through April due to mud. Deputy told us it’s usually closed every year mid march-end of April.
