Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is an amazing place. Less than 10 minutes south of Gunnison are over 14,000 acres of BLM land for camping,, rock climbing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, dirt biking, 4 wheeling, and even cross-country skiing.
There are two entrances - east and west. The east (main) entrance has a 160 acre base area, with parking lot and vault toilet, as well as multiple flowy single track trails for biking/hiking. To access the rest of the area involves a drive up Kill Hill Road, which is somewhat steep and bumpy (but short), and could prove difficult for those with larger rigs, or towing trailers.
The west entrance (McCabe) is much easier to come in on if you have a trailer or larger rig.
Once up in the BLM area, there are over 50 miles of trails and 45 miles of roads to explore, as well as countless bouldering/climbing possibilities.
Most of the roads are easily navigable, and all camp spots are designated with a sign and a steel fire ring . Some are easily large enough for 25' rigs and some have picnic tables and are handicap accessible.
Trails such as "Rocky Ridge", "Rattlesnake", "Lost Dog", and "Josho's" take you through gardens of massive granite boulders and endless sage brush.
There are even vault toilets and porta potties dotting the landscape.
Make sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as there is virtually no shade.
Cell coverage depends on carrier and location. In camp spots that are up high, with a line of sight to Gunnison, signal is great. Some other camp spots are lower and hidden in the rocks, with no signal at all.

The road to get in is steep but we got up without issue with a F250 in 4WD LOW towing a 30’ toy hauler. The road was bumpy and rocky. Probably not a good idea to climb it when pouring rain... Awesome spot with ton of riding.

Great mountain biking trails for all levels. There are also off-road motor sports activities as well as cross country skiing in the winter. Be sure to check the weather before coming, as it can be very cold and windy. But with the right conditions, it’s hard to beat. Campsites are disbursed amongst the rocks, and restroom facilities are limited. Entering from the east side involves a very steep hill. There is another entrance on the west side, which is supposedly more gentle. However, we’ve not tried it.

The entrance road is indeed very steep and rutted, and all ‘roads’ are a very slippery crumble surface. Many fine sites available, especially for high clearance 4WD vehicles. That said, there were a few 18-26 ft trailers brought in. The key would be to try the roads first and choose carefully. Easy to get lost in the labyrinth of little ‘roads’ after dark.

Just wanted to add that we went to check out the area with our Syncro Westfalia to see if we could bring our 35 feet long bus and we didn't find any way to safely access the campsites. There is a steep hill through 32B that we might have been able to do (my man is pretty game and has been driving this bus for almost 5 years, but felt it was too risky). So yeah, the campsites are gorgeous, the bike trails and rock climbing is right there, but make sure you scout it out first if you have anything else than a small 4 X 4 vehicle.

Most of the road is washboard gravel but not terrible, just bumpy. There were a few spots that were pretty nasty and would be scary with a trailer but in my Jeep Patriot we were fine. Our spot had a nice fire ring and was level. The stars at night are why we came, they were so bright! We only stayed the one night but will be back for sure, and staying much longer!

“Main entrance is DANGEROUS for travel trailers”

I have a Ram 1500 with 8,500 lb towing capacity, towing a 5,000 lb trailer. At only 60% of my towing capacity, the truck and trailer started to slide backwards on the loose gravel, with the truck in 4WD, near the top of the hill. I was lucky to be able to bring it to a stop before hitting the fence. I then had to back the trailer a quarter mile back down the hill. The camp host happened to be in the parking lot at the bottom of the hill, and came up the hill to meet me. He told me that the alternative road in is 32B, not 32C. He didn't think there were any sites available that my 21 ft trailer would fit into, so I didn't go back and try road 32B.

Get free water (and dump later) in town.
As another review says, you need 4WD to get in. BUT that's if you climb the hill at the main entrance.
To get your camper (even larger ones) in don't use the main entrance.
Instead, access the park from HWY 50 & 32. You'll pass over the river and further down a rock/gravel site. Road is blacktop/gravel but they keep it up for the trucks.
Just past the gravel pit stay to the left (32C) and you'll enter the park. There are several sites in this area.
Also nearby is the MX section and shooting range within the park. You should also still have Verizon service in this area.
