“A nice free secluded spot with shade!”

This is a great place to stay if you are looking for somewhere free, close to the lake Isabella/kern river area, and need cell service.

The dirt road in is a little sandy but my Prius handled it no problem. Your options of which dirt roads you can go down within the entire area is a little limited if you are in a low clearance car but, again, I had no problem finding a spot.

There are camp sites scattered about and most of them are under trees so you get some actual shade!

There’s a cool rock formation to climb and scramble around on that I imagine the entire family would be able to climb. It’s a beautiful view from up there.

I had solid cell service with AT&T. Streaming video and everything.

It’s around 30 minutes from the Vons grocery store in lake Isabella and about 10 from the closest gas station/market.

I’ll definitely be staying here again, mostly because it feels more isolated than a lot of the other camping areas and it has solid cell service.

Hanning Flat is a dispersed camping area near Kernville, CA. It's close to Lake Isabella and Kern River. If you're into climbing and hiking, there's an interesting rock structure called "Rabbit Island," which sits directly in front of it. We climbed it a few times to watch the sunset!

Hanning Flat is free and can accommodate tents and rigs of any size. We have a 36ft RV and found a level spot near the entrance. This is a dry camping spot, so don't expect running water, electricity, toilets, or garbage bins. You'll also need a permit if you want to have bonfires or grill outside. You can find permits for free at the local market up the road called, "Sierra Gateway."

I should also mention that it gets extremely sandy the further you drive down the road. I wouldn't go past Rabbit Island for a spot or you might get stuck!

The only downside to this spot are the BUGS. There were so many around dusk time. This camp spot used to be a lake, so there are some muddy, swampy areas (i.e. bug heaven). Do not leave your windows or doors open at night! You'll have what seems like a million insects in your sleeping space. On the bright side, they're not mosquitoes. Just annoying gnats.

Overall, I'd recommend Hanning Flat for anyone who's looking to camp in a quiet, secluded area. There's lots of climbing and swimming opportunities nearby, as well as grocery stores, gas stations, and RV dump stations (go to Camp 9 Campground to dump). We have Verizon and our cell service was great. We may have even streamed a few Netflix shows while there...

Have fun and make sure to catch the awesome sunsets this spot has to offer!
