UPDATE: I wrote this review before the local's finished invading the site and showed how disrespectful and rude they are. I'm downgrading it from a four to a two - and two only applies if you come for an over-night during the week. Not long after I wrote the review, one of the locals came blazing through my camp on his quad. By "through" I mean between my camper and the patio, a foot away from my door (I moved my RZR so they couldn't do that again). Saturday night they stayed up blasting their mariachi music, and continued to blaze all around camp in their Can Ams. Sunday morning I noticed a bunch of trash left behind. I will definitely NOT be coming back here.

I'm an off-roader, so when I read comments like "it gets crazy with all the off-roaders on the weekend," that's an instant favorite and destination for me.
The paths around the camp area are very rocky, so you'll drive super slow to find a spot. There is no rhyme or reason to the layout, but there are several sites available, all with a patio and BBQ grill. The ground is rocks and small, prickly shrubs.
If you're an off-roader, this is sand, not rocks or mountains. Most of the off-roaders pulled their SxSs on trailers versus RV or toy hauler, but they're parked in the camp sites versus the staging area. Yes, it's Saturday, and there are a ton of them.
AT&T has better reception than Verizon, but they both work. I had a little bit of latency on my ATT phone, so I switched to Starlink.

We got here on a Sunday night around 10pm. There was only one pretty large group of people partying with unbearably loud music and bright lights, but they ended up packing up and leaving about 40 minutes after we got there. They did however leave their spot trashed with beer cans, limes, and other random trash everywhere. We didn’t notice in the dark how bad it was, until the next morning. Once they left we moved to the spot they had been at since it was closest to the bathroom and no one else was there. There are dunes everywhere so in the morning we didn’t hear motorcycles playing around out there but it wasn’t too bad. The bathroom was clean except for some pee on the seat — I guess to be expected. You do hear semi trucks driving next to the area all day and night, again, it was fine. Each space has a covered picnic table and a fire pit. Flies were pretty bad during the day but tolerable. A man did come by around 9:30am and was cleaning up some of the other camp spots and emptied trash cans.

We really enjoyed our stay here! Got here Thursday afternoon and stayed until Sunday afternoon. There are clean vault bathrooms and a dozen or so nice covered picnic tables essential for the dry heat. We really loved the sand dunes and the park was relatively empty on Thursday and Friday so we could explore. It is an OHV area so the park gets PACKED on Saturday and Sunday from mid-afternoon until night, with several ATVs driving throughout playing music, which is to be expected. The closest towns are Carlsbad and Hobbs, both 45-55 mins away. Overall it’s a great spot!

Note that two locations exist. Hackberry Lake OHV EAST @ 32.6349,-103.8695 has best off road opportunities. Hackberry Lake OHV WEST @ 32.6158.-103.9453 is what is shown in the photos posted on Campendium.

Holiday weekend, so lots of off road activity on nearby dunes to watch. Not quiet, but not obnoxious.

Amazing spot for boondocking. We are the only ones here on a Monday-Wednesday. Enough cell service to work with a Verizon hotspot. A spot includes a shelter, picnic table, and fire ring. Access to a pit toilet too. The road in is a little bumpy but easy to access. Some truck noise, mainly just coyotes at night.

The day users from yesterday cleared out after grilling dinner, and there is no one else around, which I can’t believe! If you have a toy hauler, and a quad, dirt bike, or side x side, this is a great stop. We are positioned right up against the dunes in our 43 foot Momentum. No trouble at all with access. No hook ups, but there is a little bathroom. Yesterday, local folks came out to zip around the dunes, which is a blast to watch. Kids were cute, everyone was polite. Not going to lie, the roads In made it seemed like a boring area, all oil fields and Potash plants, but these dunes are an unexpected hidden gem! Beautiful sunsets, critters, and beautiful sunshine. GPS says it is about an hour to Carlsbad Caverns, which we are going to see before we leave.

We stayed here over the Christmas and New Year holidays and really enjoyed it.
This is in the middle of an oil field, so the road in can be rough from all the oil trucks. Watch for the 3 cattle guards once you turn in from the highway. TAKE IT SLOW on your way in from the access road. There is a large dip that jostled just about ALL of the contents of our RV on the way in. Upon arrival it was very busy with people using the OHV area and unfortunately the 2 roads into the area with more sites were blocked with trailers and trucks. Waited about an hour until some people left so we could get through and found a nice site facing the dunes. Most sites have a fire ring or a grill, and there are 4-5 trash cans throughout the area.
This is not necessarily a place to camp first and foremost, it’s an off-road park that has a 14 day stay limit. Unfortunately the crowd it brings can be rowdy. We saw lots of people leave TONS of trash, broken glass bottles, shell casings, and litter, which we happily picked and placed in the trash up for them when they left.
Most of the OHV park traffic is day use, and I can’t lie and say I wasn’t watching all the people with their toys having a blast in the dunes lol.
When it got quiet we would take the dogs out and walk the off-road trails which was nice. Tons of antelope, jackrabbits, and a snake or two here and there, so just keep your eye out!
Carlsbad is the closest town for fuel/supplies, and there is a free dump station in Carlsbad. Water was hard to find.
