“Disappointing site #5”

We chose Grapevine Hills #5 thinking there would be excellent views of the surrounding hills and mountains. Nope. This site is located in an extremely isolated low spot hemmed in by tall vegetation, obscuring any possible views, even in a high clearance vehicle. Be aware -- Site 5 is located at the end of a rough 7.7 mile unpaved road. We used a 4- wheel drive van, would not recommend for non-4 wheel drive vehicles.
Star gazing was incredible, though. Nearby Site 4 is on a high spot without vista obstruction -- would recommend reserving 4 and avoiding site 5.

“Backcountry Permit Required”
Reviewed 4/14/2019
A $12 backcountry permit (good for up to 14 days) is required to stay here. The permits are available at the Panther Junction and Chisos Basin visitor centers and the cost is only $6 with a senior or access pass.
