You are off in the woods, so it is always a possibility to run into some wildlife, but I had no experience with that when I was there. My dogs do not run off though, even when they are off their leash. But if your dog stay with you, I don't see any reason why you couldn't let them off leash. And there is hiking around the Lake in some areas, and some of the best kayaking! Have a great time, I know I did! :)
