This campground is technically “closed” but you are still able to camp there. The bathrooms are damaged and closed due to snow from last year and the website said they wouldn’t be fixed until next year.
So, the road to the camp is a real 4x4 road. No Subaru’s or range rovers. The only vehicles we saw were Jeep Wranglers and Toyota’s (4Runner and Tacoma) the occasional 1970s truck that the owner doesn’t care about. :)
There are designated sites with fire rings and picnic tables and some by the water. On the weekend people were just making sites anywhere they could find a spot. So it got really crowded and loud.
The lake is beautiful. It’s a large lake and there are other lakes you can hike or drive to. Little Gold Lake is only 1/2 mile from Gold Lake and Summit Lake is only 1 1/2 miles away. Dogs are welcome and most people just had there’s running off leash.
It’s a fun road to get to camp if you have the right vehicle for it.

We stayed at the 4x4 Campground on Gold Lake and it was beautiful! The 4x4 trail is apparently very rough, but we actually boated to the campsite because the road was closed at the time of our camping. The park is redoing the bathrooms at the 4x4 campground. The Gold Lake campground was packed when we arrived on Thursday morning, so be aware, it's a busy one during the summer! But what a gorgeous view on the lake, and I must say, the 4x4 campground was completely empty and that was the best part about my camping trip! No other people around, just nature! The water wasn't cold either, it was perfect for the warm weather. No cell service. If you want cell service while you're camping then you don't really want to go camping apparently. Cell service was attainable just a few miles up the road in Graeagle.
