The site had a few folks camping but the road was really bumpy and looked to be almost washed out. The vegetation was pretty thick off the main drag. Felt like a wave off so we did.

The coordinates listed on Campendium are for the general camping area, but don't put them into Google maps (or whatever you're using) it will try to take you a way that is inaccessible to RV's. Use 39.222717, -119.638593 as the entrance coordinates, and then once you turn on to the dirt road, update your GPS to 39.2335, -119.6132.
The road coming in is a bit bumpy, but no problem for our 27 foot Airstream. There are a few campsites that are closer to the main road (called "Dayton-Virginia City Dispersed" on Campendium) and were occupied sporadically during our stay. We chose to drive farther back to the Gold Canyon spots to get some distance from the highway.
Our campsite was about 1.5 miles from the entrance coordinates off Hwy 50. The setting is primarily dessert scrub brush and littered with garbage. There are plenty of spots away from where some of the more serious dumping has occurred.
Overall, it was a very convenient spot to whatever services we needed. There is water and a free dump station at the Maverik gas station in Carson City, and we got propane at the Dayton Valley Mart.
