The road to site is not plowed in winter so. We caught some good weather but there were still parts of road that were snow/iced over.
Plenty of room to get out 42 foot travel trailer backed in. Ran generator all night with no issues. I think one vehicle came up road while we were there but it was the end of December.

Arrived at the GPS coordinates and found the site. The site is located right next to a woodpile left over from logging. There was an established fire ring. Forest Service fire department came by and asked if I minded if he disassembled the fire ring as there are no campfires allowed in South Dakota at this time. The site was plenty big enough for me and large enough to put a good size travel trailer there. There was not much traffic going up and down the dirt road. The site is a bit exposed but there are trees on the side for shade. Area is patrolled both night and day daily by the Sheriff's Department. The road going in off of the pavement is a two lane dirt gravel road which you then turn onto a single lane dirt gravel road to get to the site. The roads were in excellent condition as they were just regraded before I arrived. Cell service was excellent with four to five bars on T-Mobile. The site was clean with no trash left behind. Noise level was very low from the surrounding area. Saw a lot of whitetail deer in the area.

We drove through this area today to scout out if there might be sites that our trailer would fit. We saw what would have been good sites with established fire rings for a 28’ trailer but there are very large boulders layed along the road at the opening of these sites to prevent camping. There are other signs that are posted saying no camping further down the road too. We drove the entire road and it was a stunning drive, but it appears this may only be useful for someone doing an over night in a camper van.

There is a nice mountain view. Even though the cellular signal is strong (2 bars on T-Mobile), Location Services could not pinpoint out location, so we’re not sure which mountain it is.
Great place to stay, and you can’t beat the price!

Pros: free!! quiet after 9pm, clean, found fairly level spot, saw big elk about 50 yards from truck : )
Cons: pretty far out of way, some of gravel road rough, right along road.
NOTE: SW side of road available for camping, other side of road labeled No Camping. Somewhat confusing when initially see the signs

We drove from Hazelrodt cutoff to Broken Arrow campground on 337/Glen Erin Rd.
Could only find one acceptable site, about 1.8 miles from Hazelrodt cutoff. (43.7252, -103,5384).
Can put just about any size rig that you have and pretty level.
Beautiful hiking thru the hills.
Very good road

We didn't know what we were getting into with this being our first boondocking adventure. We had this site and two others picked out in the area. We traveled down the gravel road wondering what we were looking for until we saw one fifth wheel. We stopped and talked to the guy who was extremely helpful to the noobies and explained that anything on the left side of the road was for camping wherever you could find a spot to park your rig. We have a 24ft bunk house travel trailer and eventually found a spot where we could set up. It definitely was not level but we made it work and got close enough to level. Our site overlooked gorgeous rock formations and mountains. There was a stream that led to an extremely old broken dam. We also found out we were parked near a horse trail so occasionally horse back riders would appear. It wasn't a big deal and we all enjoyed looking at the horses. We found an old quartz mine up the road and had a fun time looking at all the rose quartz and eating our fill of red raspberries.
We'd stay here again in a heartbeat. It was absolutely beautiful and only 20 minutes away from downtown Custer.
