“Decent, free alternative to Milford Lake campgrounds”

Camped 10/6/23 (Friday). We planned on camping at West Rolling Hills COE, but there was no self-pay station (had to go online), no one at the gate, and a sign that said 4-night minimum from Oct 1-15! There were 2 campers in the whole place. We drove to Geary to camp.

No site numbers here, just pull across the grass to a fire ring & picnic table. The vault toilet is located in the main camping area, and it was clean and had TP. The park map shows six sites or "picnic shelters", but tent campers or anyone could probably park in various places in the large grass area, as long as you don't want a campfire (fires only allowed in the fire rings). A fishing dock and boat ramp are also in the main camping area.

There were two campers when we arrived, and another two showed up later that night. Sites are spread apart, which is nice. There was a bit of trash, Highway 77 was noisy all night, and some people were singing into the wee hours. But we were glad for a free alternative not too far (8 miles) from I-70. Geary State Fishing Lake is open all year.

Camp site was empty. Except for the few random fishermen. Close to the water. Very quiet. Cell service isn’t great.
