We stayed here as a stopover during our road trip. We drove in quite a ways and there were a few long termers set up along the way. Definitely quieter than other reviews say if you go further in. No tables or metal fire rings, just fire pits made from stones. It’s roughing it so don’t go here if you like amenities of any kind, but aside from a bit of a creepy feel it served it’s purpose for us - which was a quiet and safe place to sleep while traveling. Nothing to write home about, but not bad.
Erin and Brian would stay here again

“Not usable ”

We did not find this area ‘usable’ for our 30’ 5th wheel. Sites not accessible and limited solar access. We instead stayed a bit south at 43.865403, -121.389029 a NFS gravel pit used in their road construction.

We took one of the first sites on the left and settled in for the evening. The site was decent enough, but had quite a bit of trash strewn around the place. Nothing too crazy, but it wasn’t exactly somewhere you’d want to spend a lot of time, no big deal for an overnight though.
Then comes the fun part. Around sunset a car comes down the road music blasting, only to pass back by around 5 minutes later. No big deal, but they did seem to slow down quite a bit as they passed on the way out.
About 10 minutes later I poke my head through our curtains into the driving cab and get choked by the smell of fuel, kerosene, acetone, or something along those lines. After getting a second opinion and the odd smell confirmed, we decided to leave. On the way out, noticed that same car backed into a random pull out, with no one in the car.
Not really sure what was going on, but it creeped us out bad enough to leave. For reference we’ve been on the road for six months, camping mainly on public lands, and this is the first time we’ve ever left somewhere in a hurry.

This smooth road has plenty of good campsites. It's close to Hwy 97, but you can get far enough away so you barely hear it. Very good access to Lava River Cave and Newberry National Volcanic Monument.
