We stayed just north of this marker on the right in an open field. I think it’s the best of the options available. Gorgeous views abound, high evergreen and aspen forests, Irish-green meadows, a palate of amazing wildflowers (even by Colorado standards), imposingly beautiful granite outcroppings, and maybe a view of the largest body of water in Colorado. Easy 10 mile drive up from US 50 halfway between Montrose and Gunnison (great base for visiting Black Canyon NP). In other words, Breathtaking. My only critique (i know, I sound like an a##hole complaining about a gorgeous, free campsite), is that some of the sites weren’t very well defined. I suppose that’s part of the fun of boondocking, but it made it hard to tell if we were somewhere we shouldn’t have been. Also, most sites seemed very unlevel. Would definitely return.

Great spot a few minutes before Sop Creek. A few spots to pull off after the private property and narrow road signs

I really liked it here. There's a beautiful lake nearby and cool mountains. Cell phone service is spotty, sometimes it works quite well other times it doesn't work at all. Came here after spending the day in Ouray. Found the listing in Campendium, but not much else. The road going up is in excellent condition. We camped about 8 miles up the road from US 50. There is a 3 mile section that is private property but then you’ll see the Forest Service signage for Soap Creek. Keep going past the “narrow road” sign and you’ll begin seeing sites off of the main road. Very little traffic during our stay. Exactly what Colorado should be.

Check the forest roads and gates updates.
The road in is well maintained and service going up was great. Would have loved to stay here but it is currently closed :(
