“Beautiful Free Camping Near Crater Lake”

Reviewed Jul 01, 2018

Overall Rating

There were 3 distinct campsites on NF-3689 that we found, and we used this map:
goo.gl/7zERDh to find where they are supposed to be located. According to the map there are more sites along these roads but we couldn't find any others except the 3 I point to in my blog post. We stayed in the largest site (site 1) that is open to the sun most of the day - for solar - but there are 2 others, one that is just north on 3689 on the West side of the road (site 2) that get some sun during the day but is mostly shaded, and another one (site 3) just Northeast of the site we stayed in that is a pull through site but is tight so I wouldn't recommend anything longer than 25ft in the 3rd site. Site 1 can accommodate any sized rig, it's a HUGE site, site 2 can accommodate almost any size rig, it's nice and large, and site 3 should accommodate anything under 25ft.

We got fuel and propane at Odessa Market just 5 miles away, they do have a market but its pretty expensive so bought our groceries when we went into Klamath Falls. We filled our water and dumped at the Pilot in Klamath Falls but they didn't have a sign stating it was potable water so use it at your own risk.
We originally tried to camp at Odessa Campground but it was full and the full 14 days we stayed on NF-3689 no one else camped down this way - it was wonderful! There is some road noise from the HWY but when the wind picks up it's louder than the road is so it didn't bother us at all.
You can go horseback riding, hunting (with a permit), target practicing (must be at least 150 yards from an occupied campsite and not aim toward a campsite, dwelling, or road), hiking, dog walking (on a leash), and off-roading in the National Forest, just make sure you're on the right trails for what you're doing and that you're not having a campfire during fire season.

We loved boondocking here and will be back if we're ever in the area again.
