This is the closest Forest Road to the town of Tusayan, but we didn't hear anything from town other than the occasional helicopter tour. Oh, and elk. Lots and lots of elk. Did you know they "bugle" at night during their fall mating season? And wander all around your campsite? Yup. Still, a great spot.
We had advance scouted this in our very low ground clearance car a few days earlier, so we felt comfortable bringing our Class A in here. Some levelling blocks needed, but we've had far worse in private & paved campgrounds. As always with dispersed sites, we spent time collecting other people's trash, but it wasn't bad. Coconino County sheriff drove by maybe once a day. Perfect spot, we'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

We have been boondocking for about two months now and have stayed at a fair amount of spots. We had a friend staying on this road in a large Class A so we felt confident pulling our 29’ TT.
We ended up staying at the top of the dirt road that is on the same road as the field if you look at satellite images. The easier spots to get in to are the first two short roads on the left and right before you start going downhill. We stayed on the first road on the left after you get down the first downhill. The turn off was steep but we did fine going slow.
This is a very popular spot, we had people in and out for the three days and two nights we were there. We explored u little road and found some cool stuff as well. This is just minutes from the entrance so it was convenient to wake up early and hit the park before the crowds. We got there at 8am and left at 11 and by 9:30 the paths were filling up.
You can also take your RV to the park but we planned to stay a few days so we parked and set up. Gas is expensive! $3.69 for diesel when we were paying $2.99-3.09 just an hour south so be mindful of that. Everything is expensive, a $0.99 soda any other place was $3.50.
Convenient for free! We didn’t try dumping or getting water at Mather Campground inside because it said their may length was 24’ and we are over that and no one would answer the phone to confirm if we could. We waited and dumped and filled in Page AZ on our way to Kanab, UT.

Great area, lots of options scattered throughout FR302 - road is in solid shape but some of the turn offs into some of the camping areas can be rough so just take a look at them before committing to turn in. You can't possibly pick a better area for seeing the south rim - totally free and just 5 minutes or so from the South entrance. Town is close, but its expensive, so stock up prior to coming here. There is a dump station and potable water available in Maher Campground thats free to use if you have a national parks pass. Dust wasn't too bad, and I barely noticed the helicopters. Fantastic stars at night. It was quiet while I was here, though there are definitely signs of people who have been partying - please pack out everything you bring in! Some shattered glass, shower wipes, dirty t-shirt... we have to take care of great places like this so we can continue to enjoy them in the future. Sprint/Tmobile: 10-15mbps down. Verizon: 15-20mbps down. Worked off Sprint/TMobile with no issues.

We were able to park in the trees where our solar panels would get aboutWe were able to park in the trees where our solar panels would get sun until about 2:00 p.m. We are about 5 minutes from the town in another 2 minutes to the South entry station of Grand Canyon National Park. Very enjoyable and relaxing. Most of the traffic on the road were 4 wheelers but not bad. We were in the flight path of the sightseeing helicopters so every few minutes in the middle of the day we had helicopters flying overhead.

Our site was far enough down the road and off the road that dust wasn’t an issue, and we weren’t under the flight paths. (By the way the helicopter tours are AMAZING!)
It took us about 15 minutes to get to the main gates for the south rim.
Private spot, downside was very little cell service.

Loved this site, big rig friendly, gravel road well maintained went in for miles of you want more remote, easy to get to grand canyon, cute little town with basics but expensive! Loud during day with helicopters passing over but quiets down by around 5pm and doesn't really start up till about 9am. We weren't around during that time hardly so didn't bother us. Not sure how the ppl getting AT&T got service because there's none, zero, zilch, nada! Not even a blip. But we used the wifi at the visitor center parking lot (North side by restaurant kitchen area) pulled in, connected and did what we needed (saved hotspot data). Verizon hotspot however we got 3 bars with an external antennae and were able to do some video conferencing we had to do. Will definitely go back if in the area.

We stayed one turnout before the GPS coordinates on this listing. I would advise entering coming from the highway and not once you've turned around from the main location. It was steeper and drug out class A a little. The main location was nice and easy to get to with fairly flat spots. Our location had a more worn road, but we made it. All the spots were fairly full of people up and down the forest road. We had a little noise from the airport, but quiet and nice weather in September.
