“Perfect spot for access to Grand Canyon South Rim”

Reviewed May 17, 2019

Overall Rating

Closest free camping we could get. Perfect for an early start at reaching Grand Canyon NP.
We arrived late, found it easy to find in the dark.
Felt like we had the place to ourselves with all the trees around.
It says that there is phone reception, however we are with AT&T and had zero reception not long after leaving Williams.

“We drove .7 miles up the road and then parked roughly 1/10th of a mile in on the left.”

Beautiful area roughly 8 miles before the GC entrance. Plenty of spots-the bigger RV’s were parked when you first enter the road. Our 5th wheel enabled us to go a bit further in. Biggest open spots are located close to side of road.we heard a few helicopters but we expected that.

“Closest free camping to the South Rim”

Reviewed Apr 28, 2019

I’m still pinching myself that we were able to camp so close to the Grand Canyon, in a nice spot, for free. We drove less than 5 minutes off the main road to find a spot and the road was in good shape. We had a big site to ourselves, surrounded by trees. There are helicopters going overhead; I think the first one we heard was around 7:... more

“Great location close to GCNP and Tusayan”

We had a site about 2 miles in from Hwy 64. The site was in the tall trees. Setup where we had full unshaded sun for the middle of the day for solar charging. Plenty of forest roads for hiking on. Half a dozen wild horses showed up one evening as they were out foraging. The tour helicopters were flying overhead as they leave the airpor... more

“Great place to spend the night for the Grand Canyon!”

Reviewed Apr 17, 2019

Overall Rating

We had spent all day hiking the Grand Canyon and got to this site around 5ish and had no problem finding an open spot. The road was a little rutted but the sites were close by so we didn’t have to go far in our Ford Explorer. The pine trees were thinned out along the roads/sites, so you could easily see 5 or 6 other campsites from any ... more

We came early because of the snow and we wanted to get in. It was a bit muddy and we got a little squirrelly getting into the site, but we are towing a 40’ fiver. The helicopters go by quite a bit but as others have mentioned they cut off in early evening and then it’s just you. Being winter, it was really JUST US. We saw a few passing... more

“Other than the helicopters, what a great place to stay!”

Reviewed Oct 30, 2018

I stayed for 2 nights, one at the beginning of my GC adventure, and one at the end. 1/4 mile up the graded dirt road, on the left is a great spot for 4-5 RV's. Cellular (Verizon) coverage was awesome (28mb download), especially when comparing to the GC campgrounds, which are "just workable" (Verizon). The choppers end before dark, and ... more

We loved it. Wonderful site in the forest. As others stated the helicopter traffic starts way and is directly overhead. We only stayed there at night and the choppers stop early. Was super close and easy to get to the park entrance.
