“Other than the helicopters, what a great place to stay!”

Reviewed Oct 30, 2018

Overall Rating

I stayed for 2 nights, one at the beginning of my GC adventure, and one at the end. 1/4 mile up the graded dirt road, on the left is a great spot for 4-5 RV's. Cellular (Verizon) coverage was awesome (28mb download), especially when comparing to the GC campgrounds, which are "just workable" (Verizon). The choppers end before dark, and ... more

Overall, our boondocking experience here was not the best... It wasn't terrible for being free, but 5 days was more than enough for camping here. Pros: -Forest Road 302 is very close to town, and we were in one of the first few spots at the beginning of the road. -There were plenty of great camping sites available for all sized ri... more

We loved it. Wonderful site in the forest. As others stated the helicopter traffic starts way and is directly overhead. We only stayed there at night and the choppers stop early. Was super close and easy to get to the park entrance.

“Easy access and great proximity to Grand Canyon”

Reviewed Jun 02, 2017

We accidentally found ourselves near the Grand Canyon over Memorial day Weekend and thought for sure that this area would be busy and spaces would be hard to come by but we had the opposite experience! We had no visible neighbors for our entire week. The road is gravel and very dusty but easy to navigate even for our large rig. Tent... more

This spot was very easy to get to. It was a well maintained wide gravel road, without ruts. We have a 38 ft fifth wheel, so sometimes it's a bit tricky finding a spot to fit into. 35.96724517, -112.11605406 was perfect for us. We were able to fit the RV truck and car in with room to spare. As others have mentioned the helicopter n... more

“Good but dusty”

Reviewed Apr 22, 2017

Stayed about 1 mile in on the left. In a 39' Class A DP towing my Jeep. Good spot for my solar but trees did block late in the day. Be ready to hear the tour helicopters throughout the day but they are done by 5pm. If you are out exploring the park it's no big deal. Verizon cell service is good here but Sprint obviously is useless. T... more

Yes, the air traffic is a bit much, but given the fact you can walk to town, (and catch the shuttle bus to the park) while camping in the woods for free, it's an alright trade off for me. I'm sure it is a different story in the high season, but in march it isn't crowded at all. Level spots with easy access, and cleaner than I expected.... more

“Excellent free Grand Canyon camping”

Reviewed May 31, 2016

This IS camping. Even though it's practically walking distance to hotels, restaurants and other amenities you are in a national forest. I wasn't sure on a holiday weekend with every hotel and in GC campgrounds booked solid I would find a spot. I drove over the cattle grate and about 1/2 mile in found tons of camping. The spots ... more

You can't beat the location. Close to Tusayan and the south entrance. The road is good and there are a lot of pretty level spots tucked in under the trees. However, the helicopters scream overhead just above the tree tops and it's just an awful amount of noise. I've heard coyotes and seen lots of elk tracks. Lots of birds too. Would b... more
