“Quiet Remote Place Not Far From Albuquerque”

Great to spend 1 night. We found easily a spot on a Friday evening (during the hot balloon festival). The road to go there is really bumpy (high clearance vehicle recommended), rain created many big cracks on the dirt.

The drive to the campsite was very scary! Fire pit was full of trash which is very upsetting. I truly don’t understand people! However, the view and peaceful atmosphere is worth it.

Need to drive on an unpaved road, but very accessible by any vehicle which is not the case with the other dispersion camping sites in this area. Drove in from the west. Big enough that you can space out pretty far from each other and completely empty on weekdays. Very quiet at night and it was very clean. I didn't see any trash anyw... more
Need to drive on an unpaved road, but very accessible by any vehicle which is not the case with the other dispersion camping sites in this area. Drove in from the west.
Big enough that you can space out pretty far from each other and completely empty on weekdays. Very quiet at night and it was very clean. I didn't see any trash anywhere. There are some fire pits, but that's pretty much it for amenities.
Excellent cell service with Verizon and T-Mobile.
It's right in my favorite mountain bike trail system in all of New Mexico. I will definitely be back.

The location is beautiful and the road isn’t terrible to get here. There are multiple entrances so the main one with all the ruts is able to be avoided. The road to get there was not maintained by any means but this is expected. We were unable to have a fire but it wasn’t necessary because the weather was awesome. The ground at the sites were flat - excellent for our roof tent. The other people around were a little odd but caused no issue. We had a little trail right off of the site that led through the woods. A lot of mountain bikers passing through which made us feel a little safer!
There were a TON of moths and big black Beatles. The Beatles weren’t near our site that we saw but on our walk we saw quite a few. The moths were a little annoying - all they wanted was water though so we tried pouring some water a few feet away from our area.

I seldom have problems accessing sites in a sports car on “rough roads”, but I was unable to make it all the way to the ridge (looks beautiful in photos). However there was a stone fire ring and cut firewood at the spot I stayed (thank you)! There is a pretty awesome elevation change from Albuquerque, so if you’re checking weather it’ll be a good bit cooler. Judge me, go ahead, I know Roswell is pretty far away, but my neck hair was on end here. If you’re not scared of aliens and have a truck you should be ok :-)
Disappointed to hear about the “ranger” (probably an alien) that said no camping. Got in around 10pm and there were a couple vehicles after me. I camped here April 2019.

Followed reviews and stayed. Quiet, however a ranger stopped and said this area is not zoned or authorized to be a campground or for camping. He gave us a long speech about us parking there.
Bumpy road yet pretty. Sites were set up as camp sites but you aren’t allowed to camp???

Pros- the location here, opened in Apple Maps, was spot on. Multiple sites had metal fire rings, some with metal grates. Good volume of local dried brush and cut timber. Looks like the National Forest Rangers cut and leave behind some of the logs lying about. No fee. Close to the road, but so few visitors, not a single vehicle passed b... more
Pros- the location here, opened in Apple Maps, was spot on. Multiple sites had metal fire rings, some with metal grates. Good volume of local dried brush and cut timber. Looks like the National Forest Rangers cut and leave behind some of the logs lying about. No fee. Close to the road, but so few visitors, not a single vehicle passed between 7pm and 8 am. No one else joined me so I had the whole place to myself. Easily accseaed off the main roads between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
Cons- this area can be tricky as it relates to campfires. No where locally sells firewood. Be kind- check the local fire chief’s Facebook page for whether or not campfires are a good idea. A bit of trash, mostly bottles/cans left behind. Less than 6 during my stay. The road- you will see some comments here saying it’s gnarly. It is. And totally passable! The directions will take you up a paved road And eventually bring you to T in the road. The directions will send you right, this is correct. Left is a dead end. About a mile after the T you will notice a tiny sign noting you’ve entered the national Forrest. This is where the road gets interesting. About a mile further in- a pull off in the south aide of the road has 2 or 3 sites. Keep on another 1/2 mile and you will come to a much bigger site. This one is a loop, with 10-12 spots to camp. 5 or 6 have fire rings. You can choose to be up on the ridge or down a bit. None are more than 30 yds from the road.
The road- typical New Mexico road that has seen flood + trucks = major rutting. No biggie, just position your tires on the hard pack on either side of the ruts and move along. DO NOT attempt in a car/truck with a low clearance. I did this in a 2wd drive Ford Escape. 0 problems at all.

We may have camped off the Forest rd 462 but I can’t find that one. Drove past the day use area to the “Authorized Vehicles Only” side and to the direct right was the “road” or rock cliff we were suppose to scale. We may have camped off the Forest rd 462 but I can’t find that one. Drove past the day use area to the “Authorized Vehicles Only” side and to the direct right was the “road” or rock cliff we were suppose to scale. Luckily we just had a truck, but somehow, someone got a very small trailer up there. But after braving the crazy jagged road, it opened up to a nice area. We made our own pull in space and had a great 2 nights.
