Stayed a few days while waiting to catch up with family. The colors of fall were starting and we pulled into a site on the water with a great view. Quiet, private, and all we expected. Will be back

Check in after 9/21 is first come first serve and you pay in a slot (which blended in and was hard to see) and are supposed to use their phone to reserve your spot once you are there, but the phone doesn't work. So, we paid and stayed. The slot was also very full, not sure how long they'll be able to take in a reservation slip without emptying it.
Would love to come back, but we'd like to be in the same spot (26, or 27 was a runner up).
Close drive to the little town of Charlevoix and we really enjoyed the day there.

The sites are very big especially by Michigan State Parks standards. You have a lot of room between you and your neighbor. There are some really nice sites that sit on the edge of the lake but these book up months in advance according to the park ranger.
There are no showers and the toilets are the vault type. There are noise restrictions from 10pm-8 am so no generators then although you may operate them during day as long as no one complains. But the cool breeze off the lake makes a/c unnecessary.
Our site was so level that we did not even have to use our Lynx Levelers. First time ever!
There is a beautiful beach and a great 3 mile hiking trail that runs through the wooded dunes behind the campgrounds.
The campground is minutes from the beautiful town of Charlevoix. We celebrated our 10th anniversary at The Weathervane Restaurant. It had amazing views on the water.

We stayed here over 4th of July weekend. One reason was we wanted to see the Cherry Festival in Traverse City and we wanted to go to Mackinaw Island. This campground is one hour from each place and directly in the middle. There is a small town about 20 minutes away from the campground.
The camping fees are $13 a night. The ranger called it a rustic campground. There are vault toilets and old fashion hand water pumps. There's no way to fill your water tank, and there is no dump. Luckily we filled up before we left and we used the generator for power.
The sites are under a canopy of trees and dirt surfaces. There's fire rings in each site. The sites are large and our 36 ft camper abs truck fit easily.
There is a small beach area at the end of the park on Lake Michigan. The sand area is narrow but if you like the beach I'm sure it will work.
Overall it was a quiet camping experience out in the middle of no where (which we like). Just fill up on food and water before you get there.
