Firehole Canyon Campground

This is an old campground that has not gotten attention paid to it. There were broken picnic tables in some sites. The sites are super small and tight. I have a 25' TT and it was difficult to park. And it was a double site. If there had been another camper in there I would never have made it. $25 a night was a hefty price for the accommodations. But, I guess that was because there were showers. But only heated by solar. Never saw the camp host or any staff.

As others have said, the sites are small and you share a site with other campers. See the pictures for a better idea of what I mean. We stayed here in a 35 foot fifth wheel and had trouble backing into the site because the concrete barriers lining the drive were too close to allow us a better turning radius. I'd recommend a smaller class C (30 feet or less) and class B, but not a class A. Even longer travel trailers could be an issue due to how difficult it is to back into these sites. Zero hookups as well. Bring your own power.

The facilities are tired. The showers were decently warm enough to take a good shower, but not very clean. The toilets were functional, but could use more attention. Sinks were the same way. The shower house further from the entrance seemed to be in worse shape than the one closer to the camp host's trailer. None of the lights worked in either of the shower houses. Both shower houses had exposed wiring that went to.....something at some point in time. Bring a flashlight if you want to take a shower after dark. Each of the men's shower houses had two sinks, one urinal, one commode, and a very small stall shower. I think the ladies portion had two commodes. There's a dump station closer to the entrance that has fresh water available. I curbed my trailer getting into it because the turn was very tight. This is a dry camp with zero hookups. Recommend bringing a generator and plenty of fuel for your stay if you want power. Each of the sites had a picnic table that had been painted several times. The roofs for each site were pergola style, so not water/sun proof. The wood was very sun damaged and in need of replacement.

Also, be aware the camp host was at the campground once or twice a day for maybe 5 minutes. He has a trailer set up with all the amenities, but was absent during most of our stay. Also, while this is a National Park, it's ran by a private company. I believe it's contracted out.

The location was off a paved road that was nice enough. It was super hilly getting there though, and I had to downshift on multiple hills to get up, and keep the truck locked in a lower gear as we were going down to keep our speed low. Not a fun thing to do when traffic is wanting to go 70 MPH and you're crawling up and down multiple hills and sharp corners at 55 MPH. Roads through the park were paved as well. However, the road down to the beach was gravel and not maintained. Rains had made several washes in the road bed that made it difficult to get down the hill to the beach. The beach does have pit toilets. When we were there, a few people were camping on the beach despite signs saying it wasn't allowed.

For your troubles, you get to view Firehole Canyon, and the views are nothing short of spectacular.

In the end, we won't be going back. We saw all we needed to see. This camp was too far off the main road, too challenging to get to with a larger rig, not kept up well enough, and not a good value for your money. Pay a few bucks more and stay in town if you have a larger rig.

The camp host was off-site with an emergency, so some understandable issues occurred with our reservation that were worked out in a satisfactory manner. We ended up with a double site to ourselves with a nice view of the canyon and moderate view of the water. There was a path down to the "campground swim beach" adjacent to the site... but we never found a spot that I would qualify as such. There were water snakes and other critters that had me thinking twice about swimming. If we didnt have the double site to oursevles, the situation would have been very crowded and lacking any privacy whatsoever. I probably won't camp here again.... but it was... fine.

We pulled in pretty late around 1:30 AM, paid $22 for a night including tax. The drive out to the remote campground is beautiful, sites above a lake and not too windy for being higher up. No cell, lots of families, not the best for wanting to sleep in :) well kept facilities, a little rinky dinky with the showers but free showers to paying guests, warm and cold water! Sites are a little confusing regarding the differences between “double sites” and “single sites” few sites are marked, made it a hassle in the dark

Gorgeous campground surrounded by Flaming Gorge Rec area. First come, first serve. We choose site #25. This site is shared with #26. We were able to put our travel trailer all the way to the back without having to unhook the truck. Nice and level, on tar. Due to shelter//picnic table, we couldn’t extend the awning, but that was ok. Table was messy with some sticky substance. Not the hosts fault, just someone not cleaning up after themselves. Easily cleaned. Nice fire pit in the ground. Views were amazing! Lots to see. Great walking paths. Bathrooms not too far away. Flushable toilets. (Two toilets for women). Shower for free with HOT water! Shower isn’t extravagant. Small for size, but it gets the job done! Floor gets a little wet from shower, so watch your step. Otherwise, works great!
There are a lot of gnats, fyi. It’s better at night and when there’s a breeze.
Nice little out of the way place. Would definitely go here again!

We camped here with our 25’ travel trailer. Parking is tight as mentioned in other reviews but not impossible. We did not use the restrooms although we did check them out and the women's near the entrance was disgusting.
That being said, we really liked this campground. It was super quiet and the views are incredible. We enjoyed watching antelope and birds.

We headed toward the campground and we’re so pleased to see from the distance that no one was there. That is because it is closed for the season! Based on other reviews we just headed toward the beach and pulled out at an area overlooking it. Incredible sunset and very quiet. Who needs the campground???? FYI, there is a dump station and you could dump tanks but no water line for flushing is open off season.

We were traveling across country and looking for a place to stay for the night, and typically look for water of some kind to camp near. This site was well-off the highway, but got good reviews and so we decided to take the detour to check it out. We started by checking out the campground, but being Labor Day weekend, the place was full, but the ranger there told us about the free sites along the beach just down the road. To get there, don't turn in at the campground sign, but head down the road until you can see the beach below. The road down tothe beach can be pretty iffy, very rutted and uneven, sand and dirt. If you are towing a trailer, I would recommend good ground clearance and 4WD to get back out, and if it was wet, I probably would not try it. There are multiple different routes down to the beach, so first I parked along the upper road and walked down to scout out the best path. We stayed only one night because of a winter storm warning for the next evening, but if not for that, we probably would have stayed a couple of nights. The only bad part was a couple of other campers way down the beach that ran their generator night and day, but the sound was mostly drowned out by the waves.
