“HUGE campground and easy to get a last-minute spot, but bathrooms were disgusting”

Reviewed Jun 19, 2017

Overall Rating

Now that camping season is upon us, making last-minute reservations as a full-timer is officially a nightmare. So when we found this campground, we were thrilled. It is enormous - 400+ spots - and there were 200+ spots open, even on the weekend in June. Hooray!

East Fork is a Passport America campground Sunday-Wednesday night, so on those applicable nights, we were able to get an electric only site for $14. Otherwise, electric only was $28. There are some full hookup sites that cost more.

There are multiple loops - A through L, I think, of 20-40 campsites each. We noticed that the closer we were to the park entrance, the better cell phone reception was, so we camped in the B loop. Loops J, K, and L are closest to the lake. While we had less bars down by the lake, we did not really test the reception down there. However, in the B loop, we got great 4G signal with both AT&T and Verizon. I imagine that tower congestion can happen when the park is full though.

The campground is ~35 miles from Cincinnati, but there is definitely nothing else around. Look at it as more of a rest and relaxation place, not a launching point to explore an area.

Campsites are back-in and pretty level. We did not have a problem in our 19' 5th wheel.

I had two issues with this campground that lowered my star rating. First, I was excited for lake access but disappointed that the beach was completely closed off to people because it was such a mess. The boat ramp was open, but obviously you can't hang out lakeside at the boat ramp unless you have some sort of watercraft - so the lake was pretty inaccessible to us. No campsites are lakefront.

The other was the bathrooms. In short, they were disgusting. Smelled of damp and mildew, toilet paper strewn everywhere, hair clumps and who else knows what scattered throughout the showers, and the shower heads - get this - were coke bottles cut in half and duct taped to the water spigot. What?!

We had some shady permanent-resident-looking characters in a tent (think yelling at each other at random hours) staying in our loop as well. It appears there are a lot of full-time residents here, which we aren't used to seeing in a state park.

Given all this, I did not find the $28 for electric only to be a fair value. I would certainly not seek out staying at this campground again unless I didn't have another choice in terms of availability.

“Beautiful Grounds”

Full hook up is new for most of the park and the same time the slots are limited. The park is very well cared full and was super clean in anticipation of Labor Day weekend. Our slot had nice combo of shade and sun with new full hookups that were flawless in design and work.
Park is alcohol free; however the cozy or red solo cup draws no attention.
My only recommendation is to avoid site C51 & 52. Both have limited open area and the fire pits are on the downhill side as in really down a hill. It's a bit of a climb up for anyone older or with mobility issues.
Overall we will be returning.
