This was a nice, quiet spot on the river. Only two other campers in mid November. It was fun watching the tugs pass by. Some trash around which seems to be an issue with free sites.

Careful of Google maps directions here. It sends you down a narrow residential road that turns to gravel and dirt
DON'T GO THERE.
Follow the signs!
Quiet, reasonably level, most are pull throughs. Little dirty but not terrible.

Sites are fairly private, Solar charging was adequte since the leaves were falling off of the trees, but would be very difficult during the summer. Road into the area is good, train tracks nearby with a couple of trains a day. Not much hiking here, but short drive to Hannibal to visit. We were the only ones here for two of the days. As mentioned before, great fun watching the tugs and barges pass by.

The campground was relatively clean but I don’t think they spend a lot of time grooming. The spot we has a rope swing and by parking your vehicle accordingly a good site for naturists. Check out our video.

The campground has quite a few people in campers (or just the empty campers) and a small assortment of tent/car campers. There is fallen firewood a plenty across from the camp sites, just watch out for poison ivy.
The river traffic can be loud at night, and the barges will shine their lights on the campground, but the traffic is not frequent.
Campsites are big, if a bit uneven.

No site numbers, no utilities But it's well lit, there are port-a-potties and there is running water at the administration building. Definitely a great place to stay when it's not game season. I was told they release flood gates during duck migration season, and what appears to be a field is flooded to become a refuge and a protected hunting area.

This is a hidden gem for primitive camping, and is accessed by going to the Ted Shanks Conservation Area. Although we did not opt to stay due to the mosquitos, we did drive the entire camping area. The sites overlook the river, and are shaded by trees. Sites are nicely spaced, with thin gravel pads that are flat enough to allow leveling with blocks; some are pull through. There are rock fire rings, and we saw one picnic table.
We had no problem negotiating the well maintained gravel roads to this campground with our truck and trailer, but it could be tricky for a large rig. It is accessed by traveling to Ashburn, MO, crossing the tracks, then turning left at the sign (see photo).
There is much marshland nearby, but the roads are elevated. However, the area is subject to flooding if the river rises. But, if the campground is open, it's a winner.
