a quiet place, in the evening it smells strongly of a fire from other spots, camping workers periodically come and look at it in order

We stayed 4 nights in the Mather section at site 29. Very roomy and nice. It was right across from the bathrooms and shower. The campground shady and a short drive from the beach. Staff was very friendly. The site didn’t have electric or water hook ups.

We arrived in late April, very few campers in the area. We are part timers usually boondocking. Potable water and a dump site are available over at one end of the campground. All sites are great tent campers or small rigs less than twenty feet. We have 25 ft Airstream and full size pick up truck 20 feet long, total of 48 feet when connected. We were in site M4 for two nights, no problem for anything up to about 52 feet. Very level.
We could have fit the trailer into any number of other sites, disconnect and still fit the truck in side by side or angled as follows:
M1 / 2/ side by side
M5 long but uphill grade
M6/7/8/21/27/34 require side by side parking maybe 30 feet deep.
M 23/24/25/26/28/29 look ok for 45 feet
All not mentioned we would avoid.
On the D loop, only D 36/38/39/40/41/46/47/50/52 looked big enough for us. 40/41/47/52 are pull thru, everything thing else is back in.

One night stay mid-week as a tent camper. Other campers very quiet. Some faint traffic train noise but rain and wind from NW drowned out most of it. Felt safe and slept well. Only disappointment was all the sand I collected on my gear! ;)

Nice wooded area, spaced out sites.
There is some traffic noise and a few trains but it wasn’t too bad in our tent.
Free Showers are great.
The beaches and dunes are not too far away.
Sunset at Mt Baldy was beautiful over the Chicago skyline.
Area is very dog friendly.

We spent one night here on a short trip to Indiana Dunes NP. Recreation.gov only listed 2 sites that we could fit our 30 Ft Airstream into, and we needed just about every inch to fit the truck and trailer into site 4 (but it did fit). The site was perfectly level side to side but had a 10 inch slope. There is a new entry fee system, but if you have a America The Beautiful pass you can put in on your mirror to avoid grabbing one
The sites are largely heavily wooded and there aren't any hookups at the sites. Longer stays relying on solar would be challenging. Water spigots and a dump station are available elsewhere in the campground.
There was a minor amount of road noise and some acceptable train noise at night. The campground is fairly far away from the core areas of the NP
ATT coverage was sufficient to saturate our capped 8mbps plan. TMobile offered 18mbps down and 10mbps up with a Pepwave Mobility 42G antenna.

only spent the night here & while it was super hot, the campground & park were awesome. the bathrooms & showers were clean and even though the campground is huge, the sites are spread out and there's lots of trees so it was quiet and peaceful. not within walking distance of the dunes, but all in all I highly recommend staying here.

This was a clean and quiet Campground. We were surprised by all the one night stays. It is a good jump off point to explore the beaches if you have a bike you can go right from the park. I’d avoid the calumet trail though, it was not nice.
The beaches are nice, West Beach is a bit of a drive by car though. We’d stay again.

Ok campground, but we were surprised to realize even though this is in the national park you still have to drive 5+ miles down the highway to the park to see the sights.
All sites must be reserved and there is no first come first serve. We took what was the only available site online, but the campground was only about half full for the night.
Our site said 40’+ but it was really level for about 20 and then a solid hill for the other 20.
Could not pull up to our table, it was blocked off with pillars. Some sites were like that, some allowed you to pull right up by the fire and table. We couldn’t tell why they were different, but it seemed random.
All sites are primitive with no hookups, but there is a dump site with a good clean water fill option.
The brush is high, so there were quite a bit of mosquitos out, but we were there after heavy rains.
Lots of ranger traffic. The law enforcement drove through 3 times, though all seemed quiet.
Very close to the state park and national park. We visited both, and would ultimately recommend camping at the state park and visiting their dunes. They seemed to have a better campground, and are closer to the dunes (walking distance vs 5 miles.)
