We stayed here for 2 weeks and didn’t have an issue with the banana hammock guy. When we first pulled in, he was waving us down and trying to tell us that there was a spot available ‘over there’ but since he was mostly naked and only wearing a thong we smiled, waved, and kept driving. We found a spot and stayed for 14 days and he never bothered us. However, we watched him leave today, so maybe he won’t be a problem anymore?
This is a great spot for many rigs of any size. Fire rings denote camping areas. There are signs posted by BLM so I don’t know what the deal is with the reviewer earlier stating that BLM does not manage this area. Maybe they sold it and haven’t removed signs? Either way, we saw the sheriff vehicles come through several times (probably because previous reviewers called them) and never had an issue with camping.
We filled water and propane at the Alamogordo KOA (free water, cheapest propane in town). Dump at the Chamber of Commerce (free, has non-potable flush water, and a dumpster)
Site is typical desert BLM: rocks, dirt/sand, some potholes, lots of thorny bushes, can be windy, etc. Some sites are more suited for vans/tents while there are larger, even some pull-through a for larger rigs. You can turn make a 3-point turnaround at the T intersection, but if you’re not comfortable making that move, I would scout this area out first.
Lots of trails around for walking, hiking, biking, OHVs, Jeeps, etc.
We are digital nomads, and we run a business. Verizon was excellent without a booster, and the area is completely open for solar.
It was very quiet here our entire time, even with train tracks 4 miles away.
Recommend checking out White Sands and Ruidoso. Alamogordo has everything you would need for supplies- Walmart, Albertsons, Tractor Supply, and plenty of restaurants.

I then contacted the Forest Service and got referred to the State of NM. There was no answer at the Oliver Lee State Park just up the road so I eventually reached out to the Otero County Sheriff's Office who took a report and all the information, including the Campendium reviews here complaining about this guy. I was told they cover the area so if anyone else has problems, I recommend you contact them... Otero County Sheriff's Office, (575) 437-2210.

My friend and I were very uncomfortable with Bob(apparently that’s his name) lingering around making comments about how we can walk around with our tops off if we wanted to and that he would chase us if he was younger. He’s extremely pushy and creepy.
As a woman, I would not stay here by myself. Even with my friend with me we both felt creeped out and bummed that we had to worry about this.
I’ve tried calling the BLM office but no one answers. If anyone has any other ideas as to how to report this guy please let me know.

I stayed one night here with my 10 year old daughter the night before a visit to White Sands National Park because there were no campsites available at the Oliver Lee State Park up the road.
As many others have already posted, there is some guy walking around mostly naked telling everyone he’s the camp host which is not true. This is a BLM dispersed site with no host. He tries to tell you where to park, warn of fire dangers, or make up other excuses to expose himself wearing only a thong. This is offensive to everyone but as a single female and mother, it is especially concerning to me. This is not okay and I tried calling the Las Cruces BLM office but they we’re closed until Monday. I’ll be calling them tomorrow.
Once this guy gets booted, it’s a great place to boondock and only about 30 minutes away from White Sands.

The grounds were well kept and maintained, no pit toilets. But when we woke up in the morning, the “camp manager” showed up only speaking to the the college girls across from us and then came over to talk to us to ask if we were also college girls, then left. Only to come back 15 minutes later with only a banana basket on. He was picking up trash but made me and my girl friend extremely uncomfortable. Nothing further happened but we left shortly after that. As a girl, I wouldn’t stay here alone but with the 2 of us we left with a funny (but uncomfortable) story.

Guy follows you around trying to tell you where to park. Says he is the camp site host and yep he does it without pants on. He is pretty pushy. We left to go somewhere else. Won’t return to this site, unless he is gone.

Easy access site with multiple spots for any size rig. We found a nice site to back in our 30' class C and had a beautiful mountain view in the morning. No trouble leveling out. Sites are so numerous and far apart that we couldn't hear our neighbors at all. Gravel roads are OK for walking around, but not too exciting. The dispersed camping is right down the road from a state park with developed sites and a dump station, but we never went into the park. Interesting neighbors and some semi-permanent campers made the place feel less isolated than some boondocking we've done. Lots of stickers and cacti so careful going off road, especially with a dog. BLM signs from 2009 saying shooting is no longer allowed, and if you walk south down the gravel road you can see tons of broken glass, pottery and other junk used as target practice in the past, but the actual campsites are free of that debris. If you're traveling in the area definitely make this a stop.
