This has to be one of our favorites. Nestled along the Verde River and only a stone’s throw to old town Cottonwood gives a quiet and remote feel while still being close to town amenities. The park is immaculate. We stayed in Quail Loop closer to the river with more trees; the other two loops are higher up with long range views but fewer trees. All offers access to trails, while Quail is closer to trails along the river and to the three lagoons. Great place for riding bikes or hiking. Campgrounds were all paved, with well-spaced sites with trees for privacy. All are very level, asphalt surface, and good W/E hook. Bathhouses older but very clean, and nicely maintained. Two lane dump station oriented for inbound/outbound traffic. Dump station is clean has trash can available and easy in and out. Campsite reservation covers the $7 day-use fee. Excellent Verizon reception. Overall beautiful CG, and camp hosts were great.

We stayed here March 10-14, 2018. Our first time in the Cottonwood/Sedona area. I will be back to this park someday despite the 2 errors I made. I will never book Site 95 again, as was horribly unlevel front to back. The reservation website may have mentioned it, but I was probably super happy to get a site at this really busy campground to notice. Also, I will never be back in this area during spring break. Way too much traffic trying to get to Sedona & the entire area of Cottonwood was super busy. My bad... We had fun hiking the area, visiting Tuzigoot ruins & town of Jerome (I could have spent all day here!).

It was mid-Winter and I had convinced her to join me on a journey to wherever and for as long as she’d like in my Volkswagen Bus, about two years and three and a half months before a cultural revolution would hashtag Vanlife the Southwest into a big ol’ VW resurgence. Back then, it felt like we were the only ones stupid enough to drive around breaking down everywhere you went, but now I sleep more soundly knowing I’m not the only fool with a wind up car pretending like it’s my house.
We’d exhausted a couple of months of every day hiking, yoga, drinking only small amounts of the finest craft beers and ensuring our inner rhythm was sound but smoking pure and clean organic cigarettes. The nicotine, they say, is derived directly from the Big Pumba’s own private herd of elk, which eat the tobacco plants and churn them internally for five years before releasing the prized substance back into Mother Nature.
Thusly and like so, it was on our first night at Dead Horse that we both simultaneously broke down and, young in our relationship if ancient was our love, admitted that instead of casting sage into a fire started solely from the friction of our hands melding together as one in the fashionably esoteric style of the times, it might be nice to simply sit around and binge watch Always Sunny in Philadelphia reruns all night.
Our dog agreed.
Nine years later, not much about this park has changed, except our dog is gone now, we’re in a Ford van, and don’t mind drinking a lot of that same good beer. It’s good to be king.

One of the nicer state parks, clean and consistent. As with all parks, location is everything...the park was booked and didn't have a choice of many spots. We stayed two nights, but not consecutively. First was when we arrived in the area before heading out to dry camp and the second was after dry camping to dump and refill.
Our first stay was in the loop at the top of the hill and if given an option I wouldn’t choose to stay there again. Although it is close to the hiking trail, which is beautiful, the sites were very close together/no privacy.
The second stay was in the quail loop which was a bit roomier but still lacking privacy except in the sites that line the woods. If we stay here again, we’ll try to book those (17-21ish quail)
For $30 it isn’t much, biking the roads through the park was nice and the hiking trails are pretty legit. You’re paying for proximity to Cottonwood and Sedona. Old Town Cottonwood is a sweet little street with lots of places to eat/drink/relax.
We didn’t use the facilities at all but they do have dish washing stations at each bathhouse which I thought was handy!

The person that sits at the check in window (elderly white haired) came running out of building yelling at my husband one afternoon after we had checked in and had our orange check in tag hanging on mirror in plain view screaming because we didn't come to a full stop!! We were just going back to our camper after dinner and didn't realize we had to stop till she told us we could proceed!! Very rude!! Will never waste 60.00 dollars here again! .

It is a large park with a couple of small lakes and good hiking within the park. The nice thing about it's location is that you are around a 1/2 hour drive from Sedona and all the great hiking there. It is right next door to the Blazin M Ranch...strongly suggest you do the dinner and show there. The town of Cottonwood is 5 minutes away and is a gem. It has several wineries, restaurants and bars all within walking distance. Do take the Verde Railroad ride out of Clarkdale, 10 minutes from the park. And of course, go up the hill to Jerome and if you have time continue to Prescott which has one of the best town squares we have seen. At the park the bathroom are clean, they sell firewood within the park and it has fire pits in every space. Love this place!

Great location, nice hiking in and adjacent to the park. Some sites are a little close together for a state park and we were there during spring break so there were a lot of families and the associated noise.
We have friends in the area to visit, so this park is always a nice place to stay when visiting.
