“Close to beach, well managed, shady, peaceful”
Reviewed Oct 20, 2017
We have loved our time at Dauphin Island Campground!
We were a little hesitant to come here because we are accustomed to being able to choose our own campsite when we make reservations. Also, we had read some less than favorable reviews about the layout and crowding. There are only two campgrounds on the island and this one had mature trees and nice proximity to the beach so we decided to take our chances.
We have NO regrets!
We stayed in site #1, which initially looked like it would be hard to get into to because you have to back in and turn so that ultimately you are parallel to the road. In reality, it was not that hard to get backed in and set up, and the funky layout of the site meant that we got lots of space around our camper! (If you can get site #1, I highly recommend it!)
The new bathhouse is immaculate and includes a very nice laundry room.
This a very dog friendly campground. There is a small off leash dog park, it was nothing special but it was securely fenced, and shady. My dogs apprecieted the chance to be off their leashes for a little while each day.
The campground is well secured and patrolled by the staff. Every staff person we interacted with was friendly and helpful. We really felt like welcome guests here.
At the back of the campground is the trail to the beach. It is a well maintained, wide, sand and gravel pathway, partially shaded for most of the way. When you get towards the end of the trail and sand starts to get deeper, the trail becomes a boardwalk. The boardwalk takes you safely through the dunes. It is a pleasant, easy walk.
The beach is a lovely natural beach. Everything is managed by the Dauphin Island Park and Beach Board and you can see the care and passion they put into caring for this island. The beach adjacent to the campground is dog friendly as well.
The island itself is wonderful. There are no chain restaurants, no chain stores. Everything is local and every penny you spend on the island goes right back into the local economy. There are bike paths throughout the island, and a commitment to the preservation of environment as well as the history of this place.
