Danville Conservation Area Primitive Camping

Crashed here with the family for the night in our tent. Plenty of spots still around on a Friday night. There is *technically* a pit toilet but it looked like it had NEVER been cleaned—ever. It was awful. The woods adjacent to the sites was riddled with poison ivy.

So with all that being said: if you don’t need a toilet, and you know to stay away from poison ivy, then it’s a great quiet little spot that is tent friendly up to big rig friendly.

Found this after driving back from the west and needed a break from hwy rest areas. Easy drive after exiting the interstate 70 hwy.

The campsite is called ‘Post Oak Camping Area’ (circled in the map photo, at the intersection where Campendium shows this spot, make a left and go about 1/2 mile).

Even gravel road after paved road ends. In the photo of the printed map, I circled the camp area I'm referring to, the Post Oak Camping Area. Several (about 8-9) designated “pods” areas (some with metal fire pits, some have stone fire pits), a toilet on the right-hand side (didn’t use so can’t attest to the level or cleanliness). When I got here Sunday evening, there were 2 other cars here.

Later, another car went by and kept going. There seems to be another camp area at the end of the road. Map shows few more free camp areas in the conservation area. Felt safe. Would do this again.

My wife and I stayed here and it was great. It is far enough away from the highway that you heard no noise through the night. The cost is zero. There are a few sites, first-come-first-served. There was a 40 foot Class A parked in the only truly level lot. The other five or so were no level. It would be a bit tightly for larger RVs, but be aware that you will need to so some real leveling. There is a decently clean vault toilet. Perfect place to stay!

We have a 46" camper and found one spot that would fit, but it was tight. It was a nice place and had a fire pit. It was very quiet. Only 1 other camper there. We decided to go down the hill the next morning to leave, but that was a huge mistake. I would not recommend going down there if you have a big rig. We had a hard time turning around and getting back up. It is pretty steep. It would be fine for smaller campers.

5 miles off I-70 on totally manageable dirt roads. Cell service is good. There are multiple locations of primitive campsites down every access road in the preservation area- the main section having 7 or 8 sites with a pit toilet. Maps are available at the information kiosks and the sites are clearly marked on the map, though some are hidden to the naked eye when driving by. Space for tents or RVs. No firewood available at local convenience stores- purchase further out in civilization. Fire pits had not been dug out in some time- indicating poor upkeep- but it wasn’t dirty.

Stayed here for 4 nights and enjoyed my stay. There are 7 camp spots, most having fire rings (no tables). During the 4 nights, only a single night were there 3 campers. All other nights consisted of myself and another chapter. I imagine this place never gets full but you could be very close to other campers if completely full. There is a single vault toilet that was mostly clean and stocked with TP. During the day, 2-3 cars would head down the hill towards the trail and always left before dusk. Very quiet stay and enjoyed walks down the gravel path with the pup. There is no water, electricity or trash so please pack out your trash. There are trees everywhere so I wasn’t able to completely optimize my solar but was able to still get sun. I had between 2-3 bars of 5G via AT&T and could work efficiently. Definitely would stay again!
