Croton Point Park Campground

Don't camp here unless you have a self contained rig. The women's bathrooms were filthy. There was no hot water, not even warm water for showers. We spoke with the office and a maintenance employee and got no help in getting warm water for showers. We finally complained to the park manager and were told that there is another shower in the area by the cabins. No one told us that nor is it marked on any of the maps. We left a day early to be able to get showers and asked for a refund of that days fees. The manager told us that they have a strict no refund policy and instead gave us a credit for a return visit. How likely it that? If not for the issues with the bathroom and showers, it is a beautiful setting. The park manager was rude and not at all helpful.

I spent 3 weeks here. They have a two week maximum but I asked for a third week because of a number of appointments and the manager was very accommodating. This County Park is beautiful. The campground has level, gravel sites. There is a RV section, a separate tent section, and cabins. Nice places to walk my dog. I would give it 5 stars except for the bathroom and picnic tables. The latter are useable but in sad condition. They need to be replaced. The woman's bathroom was filthy. While the toilets were cleaned a bit the floor had not been swept once in my three week stay nor had the shower been cleaned. The shower water was never hot but I learned that they have a solar heater, which can be iffy.
A big plus is the proximity to NYC. The Metro Train has a stop 5 minutes away and goes directly to Grand Central Station.

After a friendly greeting, we rolled past a former landfill - now bird sanctuary - and played the hokey-pokey to open the gate (there is no big rig level gate scanner), to enter the camping area at Croton Point Park. We immediately declared the place to be 'rustic'.

It's well-treed. The campground roads could use some improvements. The sites are decently sized for a County Park 50 minutes outside the most populated city in the U.S. - bigger than your typical RV park, less spacious than a typical State Park. When we were here the sites were not littered, but the picnic tables provided to each were pretty dilapidated. During the 2021 season, most of the sites in the front two rows were occupied by seasonal campers with the typical seasonal camper set-ups - little porches and a smattering of maybe garbage, maybe treasures throughout their sites.

Transient sites are mostly towards the last three rows, although there are some seasonals plopped here and there in those too. There is a separate and quiet lovely, tent camping area further into the campground.

All RV sites have 30A/water, and some also offer sewer.

There are no ground fires permitted in the RV section of this park, but you are welcome to bring an off-ground firepit.

The biggest drawback of this park is rule #13: NO CATS. We have a cat, but in order to obey this rule, we kept her inside. Interestingly, there is a harem of feral cats living here who typically like to hang out and wait to be fed under a sign that says "DON'T FEED CATS." We assume that the 'no cat' rule has to do with the place being a bird sanctuary.

There is a slightly janky dump station which also includes uncared for garbage and recycling receptacles. (This is the cat hangout area!)

The campground was decently quiet, the most noise being fellow campers, especially the seasonal (some of them appeared to be pipeline-type workers) pulling out in the diesel trucks in the mornings.

There is a subway/train station near the entrance of the park - about a 1.5mile walk from the campground - with trains running straight to Grand Central Station in NYC. The park also features a few playgrounds and walking trails near the shoreline and over and around the landfill/bird sanctuary, as well as a bike path out of the park heading towards the marina to a 9-11 memorial. There is a model aircraft field, tons of picnicking areas, and a swimming beach ($4/adult, $3/child, $2/seniors).

We enjoyed this park for its location and the fact that we were able to grab a campsite for a week on short notice.

I needed a nice weekend escape to start the camping season and this was the place. It was close and super convenient. The staff at check-in were great and you can’t beat the views along the Hudson River. Great place to hike and the sites were spread out to accommodate social distancing rules. They have full hook ups with heated water lines. It was quite and clean. I will definitely be back and spend time on their beach.

Oh lord.... this was awful.... the ground is COVERED in garbage, the tables had chicken bones plastered to them, bees eating all the garbage. There were so many bones on the ground I tried to clean my area to keep my dogs safe... not possible. If there isn't a bone, it's a 3" deep pile of goose poop. Listen I have been to a lot of campsites, and a lot have been gross it happens... but the staff was incredibly rude and that's not a combo I can deal with. You have to pay $50 at the entrance before you even see the sites. I was the only car there so I could have even chosen almost any site but zero were clean. One was covered in vomit. One had a huge tv in it. I couldn't stay there and keep my dog safe so I asked if I could have a refund. I was even understanding they might keep a "deposit" portion - I had been there maybe 15 minutes and did nothing but try to clean trash.... They said it was impossible to refund credit cards. What?

If you are in the area go to Ward Pound it's one of my favorite places. I tried Croton for a change but nope, never again. At Ward they said they often get Croton refugees.

Stayed there mid September 2019. Had full hookup site. At this time there were quite a few open sites. Some were occupied by long time residence. Many appear to be former NY residents that live elsewhere and spend summer there. It is about an 1.5 hour train ride to the city or 2-3 hour drive depending on traffic. Really nice green space with plenty of walking or running areas. There is also a paved bike path that runs north along the Hudson for a few miles. Just watch for tree roots on the path by the apartment complex. Staff was not very friendly but it is New York! Local law enforcement wouldn't even wave. I did see a few people fishing on the river but all they were going after was carp and catfish. While we there, it was pretty quiet. I felt very safe there and did not have any issues. Showers were cleaned daily. Grounds were well maintained. Buildings were in need of repair. I would stay there again for convenience sake only. Grocery store within 1 mile. Lots of other local eateries nearby. Be aware of which route you take to leave. Certain roads restrict trucks and trailers. One gentlemen signaled me to pull off road I was on as it was a $300 fine according to him. And to those traveling to East Coast for first time, toll roads will break your budget quickly. Make sure you have EZ Pass.

Quiet camping under large sycamore and hemlock trees. Some pines nearby. Large site. Many sites near us are empty. Good walk to the end of the peninsula with the Hudson River on both sides. Many birds flying in the trees. There are some sites where workers are living year round. Not a problem. The sites are clean. No fire pit at site. Nice campground.
