Crex Meadow Wildlife Refuge is managed by the WI DNR. It is composed of many thousands of acres of mixed woodland and marshy lakes. Camping is available in this undiscovered wilderness area ONLY from 9/1-12/31. This is done to accomodate deer and waterfowl hunting. Campsites are in a parking area (3) that are elevated and gravel. Pit toilets are available and there are several picnic tables.

Register first at the Visitor Center on the north side of the village of Grantsburg. The village has painted outlines of Sandhill Cranes on the roadway leading from downtown to the Center. Crex Meadows is a very popular resting area for migrating cranes and they estimate 15% of the US crane population visit here each year. Late Sept-Oct. is a good time to see these interesting birds.

Campsites are on the north edge of the refuge. Get a map at the center as it is about a seven mile drive. Refuge roads to camping are all-weather, but narrow and now are crumbly asphalt and gravel. Big rigs accessing the campsites will find it tight for turning room once in there. Fortunately they aren't too busy so there is wiggle room
