We camped here twice. The first time down in the woods near a friend, which was not the best road, but there are tons of places to camp out in the woods south of the main road. The second time, we just did the easiest thing, which is the big open space you can see on satellite view below the dam near some buildings. There were quite a few RVs here, but everyone was quiet. This spot is more convenient to the lake up a trail. We enjoyed riding the mountain biking trails around the lake and FS campgrounds. This area is pretty convenient to town. Get water and dump elsewhere, as the dump station in Leadville is pretty expensive. $30 for water and dump, I think. We got water at the Sugarloaf'n Campground for $10. The woods were amazingly clean. Everybody is doing a good job not trashing the place.

I loved this area. It was quiet during the week and got busier on Friday and Saturday nights. Lots of spots if you follow the road back in away from the main road. I had a great view of the mountains, good solar, and shade during the hot part of the day.

Took a walk around and realized how huge this place was. Any car higher than a Prius would have no issues getting around further! Most of the spots also had small fire pits made. Less than 10 minutes from Leadville!

We got to this area Sept 9th and went to the Nation Forest campgrounds. They were closed! So, we used the dispersed camping. There are no facilities, but we were self-contained. We did use the dump station in the National forest, which cost $12 for dump and water. We also dumped at one day in Leadville for $10 and $5 for water.

We were here in early June and the only busy area was at the entrance, close to the main road. Get past that and there are probably hundreds of sites. We drove the loop and there was virtually no one deeper in the dispersed camping area. It is close to Leadville and has beautiful views. We had T-Mobile cel service and great Starlink along with great solar production. Lots of good hiking nearby and the area is rich in history. I highly recommend reading the Silver Rush Mystery series by Ann Parker. It is set in Leadville in the late 1800s. Great books!

This site is conveniently close to Leadville, but very crowded. It was more of a “weekend at the lake” experience than a peaceful wilderness experience. The spots are a little close, and it does fill up very quickly(our neighbor left on Friday morning and we had a new one only a few hours later). The spot that we found was nice and relatively quiet even with the motorbikes and atvs nearby. The spot was very level and offered great views.

We arrived on a Wednesday and everything was fine until Friday. All the weekend campers began to arrive and the noise level increased 100% . Dirt bikes, stereos, screaming and yelling all day and night. Random dogs roaming around and people deciding to camp right on top of you.
I'm sure this area is much better in the off-season.

Highly suggest this location off county road 48, and I am definitely taking the family back for more dispersed camping! I parked right next to the golf course and it was super quiet. Neighbors next to us/all around us were very respectful and so were we. We had a great time on the lake during the day and enjoyed camp fires at night. Definitely will be going back for more Leadville fun!
