Overall Rating

We stayed here in August twice before a trail race (El Vaquero Loco 25/50k). First come, first served. It is pretty busy before the race, so I don't know how busy it is on a regular summer weekend. The campground is situated about 14 miles from Afton, WY, Cottonwood Creek Road is a gravel road suitable for passenger cars. The road can get kind of narrow in places (mainly due to a lot of brush), so pulling a big rig may be kind of challenging, but I have seen folks do this. Maybe go up when traffic is lower. The road can get pretty dusty in August too, but people still bike and hike on the road itself. There are some free dispersed camping sites along the way as well where I have seen larger trailers. Cottonwood Lake Campground is situated near beautiful Cottonwood Lake a popular day use area. There is an upper lot that has more evergreens and shade, plus a horse corral; and a lower lot with a little more sunlight but still in the evergreens. One group site is available for walk in. Some people also tent camped right at the lake although, there is a day use parking lot right there, so it's not very private. I believe we paid $10/night for camping although the Forest Service website says no fees currently. From the campground there are trails you can access, and at the other end of the lake. Up nearby Swift Creek, you can easily visit Periodic Spring, or Intermittent Spring, also by car. It cycles on and off like a faucet. We were camp here again because of the lovely evergreens, lake and access to high country peaks, trails and lakes. No ATVs allowed to operate in campground.
