The only reason for the 4 stars is because of the roads. Pretty rough. I had a great time. Picnic table and fire ring. Trails to hike. Lots of peace and quiet. Sites wide apart. I will return again.

We’ve been coming here for three years. The access to the first 14 sites are easy with most vehicles. 15 through 19 yellow post you must go up to the canyon you will need a four-wheel-drive or higher vehicle access. I drive a ram 2500 Cummins diesel turbo Laramie make a cab never had any problem getting stuck. We have taken or airstream all the way to the top of Coon Canyon! You don’t have to drive really slow about 3 to 4 miles an hour the road is very ruttered out. But it is doable. Each site has plenty of space very quiet and peaceful. Better access during the weekdays to grab a site for the weekend he must be in the site with equipment to hold it. Stays up to 14 days. Please pack out all trash leave it like a found it. Also a heads up if you need water Barton Flats has fresh spring water at the RV clean out area. We always fill our trailer there before we head in you can dump sewage and pick up more water there they also have bathrooms. There’s a gas station in Angeles Oaks and a restaurant there’s also store. You’re only 30 minutes from big Bear over the top of the grade for anything that you might need as well. We love this natural yellow post area please leave it like you found iIt !pack out any extra trash.

Access to the first roughly 8 sites is easy, after that you need 4wd. The sites are huge, but unfortunately not well spaced, neighbors are within sight and sound. The terrain is fairly sloped and it's difficult to get level. The neighbor proximity and slope are the only reasons I gave four stars instead of five.
The town of Big Bear Lake is only half an hour away and they have a legit grocery store. Heart Bar Campground is at the beginning of the road, and from what I'm told you can get water and dump trash there. No problem getting T-Mobile and Verizon service.

I've known about these sites for years but did not camp here until September this year. HUGE sites in the trees. Unfortunately when it comes to free sites, people forget that they are supposed to clean up after themselves. A bit of trash but did not deter from the beauty of this gem.

No restrooms, so be advised.

The further back you go, the less people there are due to the road getting more tough for non 4WD/AWD. If you can get back further, I’d recommend it as we never heard anyone else in the entire time we stayed there, it was our own private experience. We saw a rattler and a deer as well in our time here, very cool. Includes a fire pit and table, but no bathroom, garbage or bear box (neighboring established campsite up the road has both of these if you really need to use either one.) Leave no trace!

The campsites are huge and set in a beautiful Jeffrey pine forest. The scenery is spectacular and it was so peaceful. Sites 1-9 are all easily accessible. We did not make it to the other sites but I believe they are another 3 miles or so up the road after site 9. The road gets a lot more rugged and narrow and is probably suited for high clearance vehicles. We will be back.

You can get pretty far back here with just a 2wd truck and a 30ft rv. I have stayed here a few times. You can dump at barten flats campground for 10 on your way out. Sites are huge and have a fire ring and picnic table. Place is beautiful and water near by at the creek or Jenks lake.
