We've been camping 20+ years. So this was a learning experience?
We live in southeast Wisconsin, and we do the large majority of our camping at state parks and forests in the south, along Lake Michigan (including Door County), and along the Mississippi River. We stayed at Flambeau River State Forest (in a dry electric site) as a test run to try true boondocking in the national forests. We learned that it's not quite for us given what we like to do on our trips, which is hiking, biking and geocaching.
The campground is small, only 3 electric spots available (host has the fourth), and they have good privacy. But the water at the campground is heavy iron tainted and not useable for anything. There are vault toilets only and no showers. One thing that you can't find on the DNR website is the fact that there is indeed a sanitary station with better quality drinking water. It's at the park headquarters about 5 miles away. Not that there was ever anybody at the park headquarters to answer those kinds of questions. It was closed every time we passed by. They have showers at the HQ as well but I understand you have to pay for them.
There is an attempt to get mobile data into the campground. They placed a signal booster, but it was largely useless given that it the nearest regular tower was at least 2 miles away. Have to give them credit for trying though.
Make sure you're well provisioned before arrival as the nearest convenience store is 15 miles away. There is firewood available at a private lodge/outfitter for $5 a bundle.
And mosquitos. MOZCON 1 the entire time we were there. The camp host said that in over 30 years at that campground, he's never seen the mosquitos that bad. Yes, it's the northwoods. But these were awful. Bring mosquito netting and wear longs sleeves and pants.
