Namely, in that it’s “free.” Cell service works but just barely. We had no issues with bugs, in November, though we parked near the bathrooms—which are like a scene out of the movie Saw—and so weren’t immediately on the water. Driving around there were swarms of gnats but we had absolutely no issues. Lots of firewood was lying about the place and several campfires have been established, only one with a rock ring. We snagged a big grassy, sunny spot and in general the experience was lovely. And then a crew came in and fired up the loudest generator in history and kept that chugging all night long.
The road in is a dishes breaker.
You do need a permit, which you can get at https://license.gooutdoorsgeorgia.com/Licensing/CustomerLookup.aspx or by calling (800) 366-2661. It’s $55 for an annual “Lands Access” permit which is essentially a pass to go camping or hiking or use the area in any other way than hunting or fishing. If you have one of those licenses, you don’t also need the Lands Access permit as that’s included in those licenses. So, to say this is free camping is a stretch, but if you plan to spend loads of time in GA it may be worth it to you to buy one of these passes.
Cell service was there but not good for much other than sneaking a few texts out and making calls.

Stayed for three days in 40 ft fifth wheel. Limited big rig space in the designated Camping area. Restrooms with running water, flush toilet and cold showers. They are not maintained or cleaned regularly so many bugs. The time we were here the bugs were nasty. We limited our outside time. There is a nice swamp/lake but not swimmable. Evidence of active hunting so stayed within the campground when there. We did not walk and explore like we usually did as the map was not clear enough for us to know where the hunting was allowed. Solar opportunities are limited. No tables or fire pits. Road in is sand and could get nasty in heavy rains but was passable in November, no worries. Returned for second stay two weeks later. Stayed over weekend. Quiet as anything. No one about on this weekend.
